Just had an interesting experience. FYI, It's a Mojave, so has the steel hood. I had my Jeep hood covered with Xpel and had a problem, so it was removed. I have had Xpel on other cars, and at least a couple remove and replace situations which went off without a hitch.
As expected, it came off the top of the hood and the rolled leading edges of the metal just fine. But just behind the glossy rolled edge, (where it never shows, luckily) it pulled the paint off in spots leaving what looks like the white primer. Sorry, I was too flustered to take photos. Just to clarify, when you look under the front of the hood the sheet metal is doubled. The gloss color goes around this curve a little, then I don't think it was clear coated. The "less finished" paint is what was pulled off pretty easily. (I have seen this in another thread on a different make too, but not very often)
Anyway, touchup paint took care of it and, since it's under the lip, you can't see it unless you really look. (Dr Colorchip paint is really good)
The replacement Xpel looks even better than the first one.
I'm a little concerned that the replaced paint might be a location for potential rust. On the other hand, it came off so easy that it was not that great to begin with.
I have also thought of covering the edge of the new Xpel under the hood with another layer of either PPF or some type of sealing tape just in case. Any Xpel or other PPF experts feel free to chime in!
