Ok. People asked for it, so here it is. Ill update this thread and first post with 5 parts on understanding ECU basics.

This is a PRIMER on understanding ecu functions and fuel trim; not the whole gospel. I am NOT writing ecu code anymore, so I am not the guy to ask about specific table/programming questions. This is so the general forum members can understand the basics of how this stuff works and how to be a more informed consumer. This will apply to vehicles using narrowband O2 sensors and running pump gas.

Understanding this can help our approach to modifications to get better power, drivability, and efficiency; and how i got 23.4mpg on 37’s.

Intake is mopar 77072433; but any well designed intake will work. The key here isnt the exact parts used, but rather the approach. So pick the tuner, exhaust, and airbox that fits your needs.

As reference: AFR vs peak Torque. This is for people under the assumption that running leaner makes more power. If you know thats not true, you can skip.

Political reasons; the economy on e85 isnt good; and availability. My goal is tank range. E85 is great for making power, but your range on it sucks and you have to go out of your way to find it sometimes.

Completely agree. I was just poking at you. My old wrx crowd LOVES it. For ~$1,500 could go from 220hp at the wheels to 350hp/torque at the wheels.

Programming ECUs is all weird voodoo magic.

I was visiting with the guys at AWD tuning and half of what they said went right over my head.maf, mas, speed density, trim (like a boat? Naw..., and those are the simple terms!

Pure sorcery, I tell ya!

Again, great job on the video.

Did you trade it before or after you cracked your #4 piston ringland? 😬😬
Haha, no ringland. I didn’t go sti. I could make more power for less$ with the regular wrx.

I traded it after the subby dealer did oil change and dropped a pebble in there. I got half way home and smoke was pouring out as filter didn’t seal and was spraying oil everywhere. They fixed everything, but I didn’t trust the car any more.

Great videos. Helps explain stuff to us not so ecu savvy people. Where is video 5, I’m bing watching? Lol

Watched them all. Great videos.

I would be curious flow rates of intakes vs aftermarket vs what our engines can actually utilize for a targeted level of hp/tq.

Surely the stock air box is not the limiting factor.

My only frame of reference is the stock air box on my wrx flowed enough to go from 220whp to 400whp. Then you’ve maxed out the maf’s ability to read more flow and have to go to speed density, then perhaps consider an intake around 500whp.

But, this is for making power and not trying to maintain mostly stock power while increasing fuel economy.

So perhaps a quite bad comparison on my part.

Excellent videos, spot on with my limited knowledge.

(I stand by my comment that ecu tuning is sorcery! lol)

What do you get at like 75-80? That's where I operate and hit a wall of about 14.5
I dont generally drive that fast and havent tested it in depth. Id guess 17-18, but its just a guess from the couple times ive done it. Its a lot of air resistance to overcome on the 4.10 gears.

Boosted applications are different; but again, from my subaru days, no one i know of flow benched the airbox. They were flow bench tested in my vw/audi days; and intakes all made big power...i think the rs4 might have been the notable exception. My subarus all dyno’d higher with intakes; but they were not as recent as yours so i dont know if the design changed.

In out application, i think the fact we have multiple dyno’s showing 10hp+ or better on untuned trucks and the size of other factory airboxes running the 3.6 points to a degree of restriction. I dont claim that its some drastic tire smoking improvement; just that it IS an improvement....and more of one if the vehicle is tuned properly.

And look at the mopar airbox compared to the stock airbox.
