Hi all,

I am in the process of buying a set of 5 Wheels/Tires off of a 392 XR. I'm fairly new to the Jeep world and am most likely going to sell the 5th.

Talk me out of it. What are the benefits of a 5 tire rotation.

I drive in hellacious salt all winter, so would probably not keep the 5th on the truck as a spare. I have one of the $68 Walmart tires from the deal a few months ago in 315/70-17 to put on my spare steel wheel if I don't go with a 5 tire rotation.

Thanks,

Don

Lots of very knowledgeable jeep guys on here will tell you that the 5 tire is superior to the four. Probably is but like you my tire under the bed will be getting blasted with all sorts of nasty stuff. Truthfully if I ever need my spare there is a good chance I will have to cur it down. Been in that position befor. If you have the only on hand keep it, if you could use that money from the sale sell it. And which ever way you go actually rotate the tires, it helps.

I run snow tires, so its impossible to forget to rotate them. I'll be using my stock Mojave wheels for snows.

I know most Jeep people don't run snows, but once you have used a set of dedicated winter tires, there is no going back. And besides, I can't bare to not keep up with my wife in her Volvo wagon in the snow. Like last year.

For me its more about space than money. I don't like to store stuff I dont' really use.

If you don’t want it, unload it. That being said, If you decide at some point to unload those wheels, you may have an issue doing so without the full set (five).

Personally, I’d hang onto it, but you do you.

I've debated this myself for so many of my vehicles. I've done 5-tire rotations when I had 5 aftermarket wheels, and simply used the spare temporarily when I had a stock steelie spare (and obviously donuts). Formy new Mojave, I've decided to save some dough and will only opt for 4 wheels and 4 tires (The sidewalls are so fat and high, I doubt I'll be curbing these wheels.). I'll buy the cheapest 35" I can get and mount that on the stock spare wheel as my dedicated spare.

I've always had ATW's for my trucks so I've never had dedicated winters - until I got my Volvo XC90 T8 that came with 22's and uni-directional rubberband tires. I ended up buying another set of 22's but had to buy dedicated all-seasons.... I refuse to take that thing with more than an inch of snow... Ironic considering its Swedish roots, I know. LOL

Yeah. I was lucky when someone found that deal on tires this spring at Walmart. I bought 5. Sold 4 and made $500 and got a spare for free. So I'll mount my "Free" 35 up on the factory steel.

When we got snows for my wife's XC70, I went down an inch on the wheel and went oversized on the sidewall. My winter combo does not need to be babied over potholes or bumps. Turn in isn't quite as sharp as it is with summer low profile tires. But we do a lot of skiing and generally don't let weather turn us back. So its worth it to have them on the car from Dec - March.

Do you really think so? Most Gladiator owners would buy 4. And even some wrangler owners who use spare tire covers might be interested. I don't claim to know. Just a thought.

Keep it. 5 tire rotations not only make sense, but are easier to do considering only one wheel comes off at a time, but it's a no brainer as far as tire life. Besides I just like a matching spare.

I'm in the process of getting aftermarket wheels and I'm buying 5 even though I'm buying 18s which are already more expensive in itself (than the common 17). I currently have 5 on my stock Overland wheels. Got rid of the spare when I upgraded from the standard stock rental car looking tires. Bought an extra matching Overland wheel for the spare when I bought 5 new tires.

If they werent beadlock or were easier to find a single rim i'd say just sell the 5th. But with them being beadlock and single rims hard to come by keep the 5th. If I was buying I'd be looking for a set of 5 when so I can get 20% more life out of my expensive tires with a 5 tire rotation.

Personally…I’d want a matching spare. I went to that expense when I just bought new wheels and tires, because that’s what I wanted.

You’ve got to do what’s right for you though.
If you don’t have storage space and/or you need to repurpose the funds that the extra wheel would bring, sell it.

Some people never run their spare and think that they’ll only buy 3 tires when the originals wear out. Problem is, that spare tire is now years older than your new ones. I like to be able to do a 5-tire rotation. If you only buy 4 the next time you need tires, you still have the option of keeping the best one that you have used for a spare. Some tire shops won’t mount and dismount a 5 year old tire regardless if it has never been on the ground. Then you just wasted a tire.

I was somewhat in this postion a number of years ago. On the highway, hear a big bang look out the rearview mirror and don't see anything. Couple of seconds later I see my spare come down from the sky and bounce across the highway. Luckily there weren't any cars nearby. Cable holding it under the truck had rusted through.

I just bought a set of 5 XR wheels. Was debating the same. I'm thinking I'll hang onto it but not mount it. Will probably be easier to sell them as a set of 5 in the future.

I do a five tire rotation and servicing the tire lift is not a big deal. You should maintain it whether or not you rotate 5 tires. Keep the 5th wheel. No reason not too.
