Or fuel lines and the heater core…
I would hope the heater core especially was well out of reach of the transmission......but then I've not taken the heater core out of one of these. It's rough enough taking the heater core out of my cars.

That thing saw some crazy RPMs abruptly, or some blunt force. OP, I hate to say it, but your friend either dropped the clutch like a drag car at 7000, or downshifted the heck out of it by majorly missing a gear (even if the clutch wasn't released). That's not just a slipping/bad clutch. Your pressure plate exploded. I had that happen once on a car I used to drag. Luckily, the bell housing kept everything enclosed on mine, so my transmission survived. It looks like whoever was in your vehicle was lucky nothing hit them.

Scatter shield or stock bell housing?
Last one I saw explode at the AMC Races led to parts of flywheel a good 40 feet from the car, a rip in the floor, and the shifter smacking the guy so hard in the leg he walked with a limp for a while. He was damned lucky.
I have to agree - that where it broke in this case wasn't clutch - it was a missed gear. A really sudden, drastic change in RPM where parts of it wanted to go this fast and other parts said no, only this fast, and the torque twisted the case.
I just can't see how the clutch can possibly cause it, but working on transmissions for years, and having made mistakes myself, it's really easy to see how a downshift at high speed could bust it.
TORQUE.
A friend actually busted the output shaft on his GTO automatic doing a similar stunt with a shift kit that allowed a high speed downshift. SNAP.

If warranty doesn't cover it, almost seems like it could be an insurance claim.

There have been a number of cases documented on JL Wrangler forum. Do some more research. Some people have almost died as a result of their transmission blowing like a grenade and starting a fire. Jeep knows about these issues and they have had a number of recalls on the manual transmissions. They are dangerous. I don't think your friend did anything. It's been documented extensively. If the dealership tries to pin this on you or your friend. I would hire an attorney and have him review your options.

Cases "like yours" where people were driving normally on the highway and the tranny just grenades.

So the case just blow apart for NO reason at all? Nothing caused it? The case simply cracks most of the way around and opens up?
I'd lay money on some of those being people.......... who either lie or won't admit they screwed up.
Any copies of the actual recalls - with specifics?

I would love to see the recall info as well.
