SO this particular model encapsulates the whole OBD 2 connector; intended for a Merc ML. Part no: OBD103A

really sucks to hear. these proximity entry sensors are way more trouble than they're worth. happened to a friends new charger a few blocks from me, right out of his driveway at 6am. had a dashcam that was ditched so got some footage off of there (just the guys hands, and an ipod plugged into the dash, likely some app or whatever to start the car). so they did NOT go straight on a wrecker. guy drove for some amount, ditching everything that was in the glovebox on the street, etc. alarm never went off. car had a tracker, police were able to track to a suburb then trail cold. likely they loaded onto a truck, disabled and ditched the tracker too.

im glad my JT willys doesn't have proximity but not sure if that helps (still has remote start). wifes new VW has proximity entry and from what i can tell, it can't be disabled.

i'm looking into kill switch type solutions (honestly something like mad max fury road, some crazy combo of levers and knobs or it doesn't start/shift...). with doors off, unlocking is obviously not the problem. need to keep the thing from starting

btw, my alarm does NOT sound if armed and the hood is opened. is that normal?? i thought there was some kind of switch under the hood to sound the alarm if it's opened while alarm is armed

I'm also wondering if I run a switch off from the brake pedal sensor to say your AUXBeam or Switch Pros would work?????

Its crazy how the more I read these the stories the safer I feel with a 6MT and leaving my maual doors unlocked. Would be interested to see testing on the none keyless entry fobs and if they are harder/easier/neglegently changed vs the passive entry and keyless entry systems.

You have the same fob as it pertains to vehicle ignition. Just as easy to clone.

the difference though is there no "long range" funtionality to the truck or fob. Sports (non-s) have no antenna to detect outside the vehicle for a signal. Only internal. There is nothing but the RF Hub and the ignition node that detects key presence, RF Hub only can detect the key within the confines of the vehicle, and Nod can only detect the chip in the key that has a range of maybe 2" at best.

My understanding of how the Tazer works is you can start the vehicle but then you need to input a code. If you fail to do so the vehicle will shut down and can’t be restarted. Not sure what the time delay is. Perhaps someone on this forum knows more information on this Tazer function.
The issue is that most bad guys know where the security gateway - the firewall is. They know how to bypass it or access the CANbus star connectors. The tazer can only do things while it's there.

My thing is -so what if it requires a code - you remove the tazer and start the truck and drive away.
Unless someone can show it's not a LIVE function, all one has to do is rip it out, start the truck, move along.
Otherwise the tazer will only stop those kids looking for a joy ride - not professionals.
A pro will know about tazer, SGW, etc. If the thing starts then dies, they'll take the panel off and remove tazer - or they'll look there first.

So - is this a tazer LIVE function or does it get into the BCM and set some selectable choices and install a PIN?
If it can do that then so can any software or other device that chooses to do so.

Yup - the EXACT same fob. I didn't have passive entry on my 2020 and added it myself. Didn't have to do a thing to the FOB - same FOB.

It only means they can unlock the door - passive entry or not, they can STILL start it! The thing is to protect the FOB.
Folks can't seem to get the basic of how to secure the truck - don't allow them access to the fob signal. It's the signal, FOOLS leaving the FOB by an outside wall so they can relay the signal.
You can have passive entry and it's secure as anything out there if you block the FOB signal.

If you leave the fob open by the wall, they can still start the truck once they get in. Passive entry just means they don't need to pick a lock or break a window, etc.

the difference though is there no "long range" funtionality to the truck or fob.
A truck that has remote power locks but no passive entry has the same receivers in the truck. Hundreds of us have proven that by adding the handles and wiring to the door - and bingo, we have passive entry.

It's the "remote" power locks that give you the long range because you can lock and unlock the doors with a button press.

So you'd have to get rid of the remote/power locks completely.
But why not just protect the stupid fob? It's a simple concept - protect the fob, taking your truck from your home is harder because they can't use the relay trick. You can have passive entry, you can have remote power locks, you can have remote start - just protect the fob.
But that's a difficult concept so instead it's all about disabling the truck.
No, cover the fob.

I have been reading about the theft of JT and other Jeeps for a while. I have a 2022 JT that I did a little thief-proofing. I have added a Bolt lock to the hood it uses the Jeep key and locks the hood at the safety latch. I have added a lock-out switch. And last but not least. I spent several months looking for a JT that did not have remote anything. Last but not least, I made sure that the damn thing was standard as I figure that most of the chuckle-buts that are stealing all of our Big-Kid toys can't drive a standard transmission. Or at least I hope so.

If there is no passive entry, then how would an unlock request be triggered to interrogate the key fob?

To my knowledge it’s live function. I believe it was designed for car jacking. So basically in the event of a car jacking shut the vehicle down give the ahole your fob and call 911. The ahole then starts the vehicle no problem then it asks for your code the ahole doesn’t have the code vehicle shuts down and you are no where to be found and the Calvary is on its way.?

Going by how it was explained a while back.
Yes, you'd expect a challenge to cause the fob to respond....

In any case, all of this can be avoided by shielding the fob.

Just read three articles from various organizations - they all say "solution, shield the fob".
Gee, you can keep your keyless entry, no need to disable it if you shield your fob.
That's the real bottom line. Fob fob fob - shield it, then they can't do squat.
Why should I disable features if I need to do is not leave the fob by the door?
