I’ve read about people getting rock chips on hinges. I figured I might find a way to save mine before it happens.

22$ on amazon

The tape on these things is bs. Do not use it. Get some good 3M tape5$ a roll for the 1/2” stuff. I used two rolls. (it’s black with a red backer and apply it like this.

I would suggest painting to match your vehicle or just leave them black or paint them in like a flat black or a glossy black but the way that they come doesn’t match glossy black very well. I painted mine three coats of Matte krylon fusion black three coats of Matte clear.

After you apply the tape, it’s not a bad idea to warm the tape up with a hairdryer or a heat gun and press hard, so that it sticks to the plastic. It’s also a good idea to use that same hair dryer or heat gun to heat up the tape before you stick them to the vehicle. As with all things regarding this tape, you should clean both surfaces with rubbing alcohol before applying the tape and let sit at least 24 hours before you use an automatic car wash
this is how they turned out. I’m pretty happy with how they came out. I painted mine in Matte , black because the graphics and other accents that I’m putting on the outside of my vehicle are also going to be Matte black.

And now, if a rock hits that plastic part who cares? It’s just a piece of plastic, I can get another one whole lot cheaper than repainting the hinge or worse getting a chip, and then it turns into rust.

Well done and it looks good. My issue with paint and hinges, like most, is the factory paint bubbling and peeling off. As @SargeDiesel mentioned, mud flaps do help with self inflicted flying rocks but I do see a purpose in protecting against every day "life" and the damage it can bring.

I'll say it again, looks good and you did a very professional looking job!

thanks! I did weather tech flaps too.
If you installed the mopar fender extensions, you’ll need 1 1/2” bolts to get through.
Plus a little flat black spray to cover them up lol.

not bad for a rattle can then? Heh thank you
Yeah they look great. It might be the picture, but it almost looks like aluminum.

I've seen them before, but never really paid attention because they were lime green on a purple jeep or bright orange on a blue jeep... just not my tea bag.
But yours look great !

Those are the same ones I have. Just had to get an entire new set because I lost one on the trail somewhere but oh well, the hinges still have all their paint, which is better than my JKUR had. The only thing i've noticed is not the rocks bounce off the plastic and hit the body panels now so it just relocated the chipping.

I didn't have any problems with the tape they came with, I only lost the one and it took some effort.

Great job . I thought about doing this a while back. I worry about the covers holding moisture and dirt With the corrosion problem these have ? I would want covers easy to remove for blowing around hinges when washings and weather. Too bad they don’t just clip on ? They look great though !!

If you don't want ugly plastic covers for $12.99 you can get some precut paint protection vinyl.

im sure there’s airflow in there. The tape makes a small air gap by itself.

I could have. My thinking was this is more solid than vinyl. And I wanted it flat anyways. So it worked for me. You can barely tell a difference from close up.

Good Information. They too look good on your truck. I have yet to find a set of mud flaps that I can justify the cost because I can be a tight wad sometimes. Weather Tech is on my radar because I have had one instance of pulling into traffic and throwing rooster tails of mud from MT's. Not my proudest moment.

the reason I went weathertech in the vent visors and flaps was their warranty. I’ve used it in the past. Had a visor fly off. They just said, sorry here’s a new one. The flaps are solid. Custom fit to the truck perfectly and accommodated the rock rails with room for bigger if I go that way.

Ordered a set in black today. Will take OP's advice and redo the tape and attempt to sand/paint in matte as well. Figuring that will add nice touch of contrast to white paint and protect the hinges for awhile if not forever.
