I’ve read about people getting rock chips on hinges. I figured I might find a way to save mine before it happens.

The tape on these things is bs. Do not use it. Get some good 3M tape5$ a roll for the 1/2” stuff. I used two rolls. (it’s black with a red backer and apply it like this.
I would suggest painting to match your vehicle or just leave them black or paint them in like a flat black or a glossy black but the way that they come doesn’t match glossy black very well. I painted mine three coats of Matte krylon fusion black three coats of Matte clear.
After you apply the tape, it’s not a bad idea to warm the tape up with a hairdryer or a heat gun and press hard, so that it sticks to the plastic. It’s also a good idea to use that same hair dryer or heat gun to heat up the tape before you stick them to the vehicle. As with all things regarding this tape, you should clean both surfaces with rubbing alcohol before applying the tape and let sit at least 24 hours before you use an automatic car wash
this is how they turned out. I’m pretty happy with how they came out. I painted mine in Matte , black because the graphics and other accents that I’m putting on the outside of my vehicle are also going to be Matte black.
And now, if a rock hits that plastic part who cares? It’s just a piece of plastic, I can get another one whole lot cheaper than repainting the hinge or worse getting a chip, and then it turns into rust.
