The whole University and College degree system is broken with plenty of blame from just about all sides to some extent. Universities, Bankers and to a large extent, Corporate American does not want to change the status quo. To them, it is a self-licking ice cream cone of a system.

Irony is these kids could not secure an auto loan without showing the ability to repay it. School loan though, shit, here is $100K+ and we will figure it out later. There really should be a prerequisite course prior to start College that makes them understand completely what they are undertaking and assuming liability on and what the degree they want to pursue actually pays post graduation in the marketplace.

As to Parents and what their kids do in University, I would venture most are just plain ignorant of what their kid is doing until they show up on TV at a protest or call for bail money when they are arrested. Kids are just malleable and their brains have not fully developed until they are around 24-25 years of age. Every generation thinks they are going to change the world and latch on to whatever the next trend is and usually is just like lemmings jumping off a cliff, they are just following the next asshole in front of them.
They should also only give loans to people getting degrees that will allow the loan to be payed back. So many people take out these huge loans for programs that will not earn that money back in a lifetime.

There is a dude who lives near me that has these on his Tacoma. I secretly pray that he gets pulled over once a week...

I don't disagree with that.

Here's an observation I had about the Fortune 50 company from which I retired. They really didn't care what degree you had. I mean the Engineering Department would want engineers but they really weren't picky about ME, CE, EE, IE, etc. The HR team had a general "philosophy" that the degree was 1) an indication that they could stick with something for a period of time and 2) the GPA indicated how much effort they put into things. That was it. We would have hired you to be a Plant Director with a degree in Renaissance French Literature. Many companies have that mentality today. It's a search for "warm-bodies" because no one wants to work hard, start at the bottom, etc. anymore.

Unfortunately, many of the people getting those silly degrees are not into working their way up the ladder and just want things given to them, which leads to companies having to just take a warm body. It is a nasty cycle.
