2023 Sport S with 8,000 miles on it. Never abused. Hasn’t even been off-road yet. I have verified multiple times it’s full of oil. Never burned any that I’ve been able to notice.

I asked a very trusted and knowledgeable forum member in private about it and he gave his opinion but I feel I need a larger sample size before I take my truck in next week for its oil change. At that point I will ask about this noise.

Before conclusions are jumped to I’ve done a lot of internet detective work and test drove a 2020 model Rubicon listening for similar sounds to what I hear. I heard a similar noise in the rubicon.

So here is the explanation:

It’s a light to moderate hollow tapping/knocking noise that can be heard when standing in front of the grill with the hood closed. It is hard to hear at all from the side of vehicle.

It does NOT show up until the oil temperature is at least 165 degrees. At 185 it becomes obvious. If (while engine is warm) you turn the truck off and immediately turn it back on, for anywhere to 10-30 seconds you can’t really hear it. If you listen real close at about 30 seconds a “click-click” sound can be heard and then the noise shows up again. It will do this every time on my 2023. I didn’t notice that on the 2020. The noise was just there on the 2020. I did notice the noise in the 2020 was a bit fainter.

Blue truck is mine. Red is the 2020 Rubicon

Can someone please tell me if they hear this noise. lol.

#its easier to hear with headphones obviously.

The fact it is almost unnoticeable from the side and mainly from the front makes me think it is belt pulley noise.

The click that is heard after the “turn off/turn on” cycle after vehicle is warm. You can hear the “click” then the tapping starting back up again. Can be heard best with ear phones of some type.

Yeah, can hear it with hearing aids too,

I can hear it in the background with my hearing aids, sounds almost like a analog watch ticking, kinds hollow toc toc, toc. I have a suggestion, if you are any good with computers or know anyone who is they may be able to use an equalizer program to cut out the foreground static noise and isolate just that noise.

Both my '16 JKUR and my '22 Gladiator overland made/make a similar noise. I had my Wrangler for eight years. Whatever it is, it seems to be "normal." A lot of the 3.6s (if not all) have that click.

The “click” or the “tapping?”

I figure the click is normal. I just mentioned it because of how it coincides with the onset of the tapping.

Thanks for the info.

Both the "click" and the "tapping." My dealership has very competent mechanics, one of whom I've known for over twenty years now and they've told me they're normal engine sounds coming from the 3.6.

My '22 Altitude has the exact same noise. Sounds like a damn diesel but only when you're in front of the grill. I noticed it early on, maybe at 2k miles and I now have 12k. Sometimes it's louder than others but definitely louder the warmer the engine is.

I was convinced early on that it's the engine tick, lifter, cam issue but I've asked about it when in for service and was told just normal 3.6 noise. I'm pretty sure it's not the engine but something up front, belt, pulley, whatever.

I've decided I'm not gonna obsess about it anymore have accepted that that's just what my engine sounds like.

Yeah, I agree. I don’t want to obsess about it, but I would like to know what it is. If for no other reason, if I decide to sell it to someone else, I can quickly respond to them questioning what the noise is. My gut tells me that it has something to do with the two-stage oil pump. I only feel that way because of the predetermined times it seems to show up. For instance, only makes itself known after temperature reaches a certain level And if you turn the vehicle off and on, it takes a few seconds for it to begin again.

Thank you for your reply. Makes me feel better about my truck.

Good point about at least knowing what it is to be able to speak to it down the road if you try to sell. Also didn't think about the possibility of the oil pump. If you do decide to take it in and miraculously get an answer, please let us know.
