Hi all,

It’s time to start looking for our next car.. fret not, the gladiator is staying, but my wife wants to get back into the rugged realm. She had a 14 JK on 35s back in the day, and currently drives an x3m40i. It’s nearing end of life for bmws (~75,000 miles) and her heart is set on a new grenadier.

does anyone here have first hand experience? Obviously same power plant as her current x3, (b58 but detuned) and same transmission, but solid axles, tremec transfer case, and simple ladder frame. Anything I’m missing?

Meh..... I'd opt for another Jeep - Gladiator or Wrangler. Or get something that's been around a long time, like a Land Rover (if you gotta have 'that look') or a G wagon if you've got money to burn. 🤮

My concern would be a bmw turbo offroading. I am anti turbo for off roading. If she wants to wheel. Steer her to something with an na engine. If it's just for show. Should be fine.
Really can't understand why grenadier didn't offer an na v8 at this price point.

Agreed. A 4 liter NA v8 would be amazing. My only thinking is the b58 was approved by Toyota for the Supra and to an outside manufacturer, that used to a golden stamp.

she’s not gonna wheel, so no problem there. As for another jeep, or gladiator, she’s been there and done that. We have my gladiator and that’s enough jeep for her. The unfortunate aspect is that her exposure to range/land rover is they’re in the shop more than not. As for the G, we see those almost daily in Atlanta.. the ineos is a bit more… special, she wants something unique

Sounds like you’ve got your mind made up regardless……

Unique? 😂 How about a Cybertruck? Rivian?

Don’t listen to others about turbos and off road, at least not in regards to the B58. The B58 feels like a NA engine and there’s no Turbo lag. Have this engine in my Supra and it absolutely rips off the line. There’s absolutely no waiting for anything to spool up. Heat buildup if your banging around going 2 mph for extended time in rocks may be a concern though.

If you want to scare the other ladies at the country club with their G Wagons, that is the right vehicle to get I guess.

My issue with turbo is not lag it's heat soak. But I live in Florida. Na heat soak is also an issue to monitor.

Is she wants rugged, and already has Jeep experience....and YOU have the cash on hand:

Buy a Gov Surplus Humvee. Not the civilian 'Arnold" deal, the real deal. Sent it out to get it gone over mechanically. And find a shop to swap seats and make it comfy.

She WILL BLOW THE MINDS off of her GF's at the country club.

No Mercedes G Ride - gold chains - wanna be joke, or anything BMW has to offer (X7, IX), or anything anyone else has to offer... She will be the winner winner and you might get some extra love from her.

But, if you're broke: Do the same... Just get a real deal HMMV from Gov auction and leave out the comfy seats. It will go great with a leopard purse and outfit.

I've got a Grenadier, really two options here, either ask about it from someone that owns one, or ask for opinions from people that don't.

Most of what I've read here is not accurate to our experience.

The B58 is substantially better than the 3.6 in my JTM. Torque is comparable to the 3.0 JTD but it's faster than the JT. Requires premium but it's turning close to 21 mpg combined. The B58 is well known to be reliable at this point, it's not a new motor. The Grenadier is detuned as already mentioned, but having driven both the Supra and the Grenadier the detune results in better torque at low end if you ignore the weight difference. The detune should return better reliability as well. I can't speak to heat soak, not really sure what to say to that as I've never had any issue on any vehicle with that, but I'm in the PNW.

I can answer just about any question you've got though. With transparency, it hasn't been flawless. It did have a transfer case seep, thing is my rear main on the JT seeps just as bad. The difference though is our local dealer for Ineos was amazing and repaired it without a second thought. There is a TSB for the issue though. That's it for the cons though. If I wasn't focusing our finances elsewhere I'd have an order in for the Quartermaster to trade the JTM. It's a better truck overall, granted it does cost a fair share more though. If you're in the market though, they're wonderful, just be prepared to get lots of compliments and inquiries.

Pics pls. Would love to hear how it compares/contrasts to the JT. I’ve talked to a couple guys with a Grenadier and it’s on my wife’s list after her Bronco.

Grenadier. Looks like a Rover.

Solid axles.

Made in France. BMW engines.

ZF transmission like the Jeep has.

Hodge podge, but capable.

Sounds like a train wreck with personality and solid axle capability.

I actually like it.

Good luck.

The comparison is really apples to oranges and would be better done with a JLU, but...

The Gladiator is certainly easier to drive in a spirited way. Although the JT is not a truly spirited vehicle the Grenadier has a slower and heavier response. It does not have a recirculating steering wheel so at first or when driven back to back with just about any other truck it feels slow. The shorter wheelbase does create some need for near constant steering input. This is still better than my FJ was, or a JKU/JLU. Its worse than the JT but better than many other short wheelbase SUVs.

The JT is more of a toy, with the top panels and possible top down if you don't have a camper like me. The JTM suspension is nicer when its at temp, but the Grenadier can do things with plain jane 2" shocks that surprise me. It is very damp in everyday street driving and does well off road, but to no surprise the 2.5" RR Foxs out perform here.

The JT is a truck, so, bed.. Grenadier cant compete there, but the QM will.

The Grenadier is more damp throughout, the interior panels are more solid, the frame and suspension have less play/slop. There are times though where this is a downside, as vibration can be louder in the Grenadier, although rarely.

The Grenadier bests my JT in fuel economy while very clearly outperforming it in acceleration. The torque is available at very low RPMs and it is a lot more enjoyable in our hilly area and on day to day hauls. Sound is subjective, but the Grenadier sounds better, slightly turbo noise, much better exhaust stock. The AWE on my JT sounds great though.

Grenadiers safari windows close the gap on not being an open top, but not enough.

At first glance the JTM with leather and all the bells seems nicer than our cloth optioned Grenadier. But that gives way to how the Grenadier feels like driving a plane, even the instrument panel uses the same symbols as commercial planes for the seat belt warnings. The Recaros in the Grenadier and flawless, much better than the Mojaves with the increased bolstering. The Recaros grip and hold better as well, no contest there. Really the Grenadier and JT both feel special and unique, the Grenadier will really hit though if youre a sucker for old and nostalgic. I get approached about both of our trucks, but the Grenadier does bend necks and can results in random people taking selfies with the truck, love it or hate it.

I could go on, Im a details kind of guy.

I think in short, you get what you pay more for with the Grenadier. The JTM shines at its price and honestly with the current discounts I think the JTR and JTM are the best value in the midsize market, Im sure thats likely to be contested though.
