You called that piece that Jeep supplies a receiver. It is not.
The receiver only comes with the tow package.
The part you mount IS the receiver.

If you have a receiver that is mounted to the frame, you have the two package. You need nothing else at all.

#2 in the original post is technically a receiver as well - it receives the ball mount or other accessories.

I will agree with this. Out of the past two Rams and the current Ram, two came with a tow package (as listed on the sheet) and had the entire setup that mounted to the frame. As well as my JT. The one Ram that didn't come with the tow package (as specified by the sheet) only had the receiver that could be mounted to the bumper. I bought an aftermarket hitch that mounted to the frame with the receiver.

Side note: Hitches that mount to the frame is all that I will ever use because I tow a lot.

When you call and talk to people at these businesses, you reach front line support people - not technical people, not engineers, not designers. Been around in the business long enough to understand they toss words around and mix things up - they are usually talking to consumers who don't know any differently. They interchange words.
I have heard it all.

Use any word you wish.
Those in the know will know better.

Whatever.

So you're comparing a Ram to a Jeep?

If a Jeep has a row package it also comes with the FULL HITCH/RECEIVER setup and ready to tow off of the lot.
It's jeeps NON tow package that comes with this cheap shortcut
I have no idea why but they do. If you haven't done so yet watch the installation video here

Bottom line end of story is if the original poster has the part mounted to frame he only NEEDS the part in pic #2. If it's not there he needs #3.

Doesn't the JT factory receiver also bolt to the bumper as well as to the frame, taking the place of that last cross-brace on the non-tow package JTs.

And one has a higher tongue weight and tow rating than the other.
500/5,000 vs. 600/6,000 (or more with a Rubicon)

Nope.... Reading comprehension is important. I was stating what both trucks came with from the factory as per the build sheet that accompanied both trucks.

If it makes you feel any better, my Uncle's Chevy specified that it had the towing package and his came with a frame mounted hitch. As well my other Uncle's Ford.

And if you give me a few, I can bring in a few other manufacturers as well.🤣🤣

Anyway, here's a pic.
I can't get the site to upload the photos.
I run into that now and then. I was just messing around - figured it didn't upload for some reason.
------------------
If you use a ball on the bumper, you are actually not attaching the ball ONLY to the bumper, it's also attached to the rear cross member.

So people know what I was talking about - and to show what I mean in that the piece is a cross member and that yes, the #2 "receiver" bolts to a cross member AND to the bumper.

Even CURT calls that rear piece a CROSS MEMBER. It is a cross member.
I knew I was otherwise correct but had no proof someone would believe - here it is, out of the mouth of Curt, the company that makes the cheap bumper/cross member mount receiver ->

Jeep Gladiator Recommended Aftermarket Hitch Receiver for new 24 Gladiator Sport S 1745776805311-xa

it also does attach to the bumper - There's a hole in the bumper itself for a BALL, you drill through the plastic bumper cover and the small receiver (#2) is bolted to the bumper using the BALL hole.

So it's really not that much stronger than a ball in the bumper type setup. Why? Because it mounts the same as a ball would.
These are not rated for bike racks and so on.

Prepare yourself first.🤣 I'm backwoods and country. You might have to bring a translator!🤣 Then I can say I have one friend from Iowa.🤣

All joking aside.... come on down. Let me know when and where and I can try and make a trip to where ever you are. Say hello to ya!✌🏾

Our 2019 JLUR was in the dealer shop and the service writer called to tell me they tested both batteries and they both needed replaced and being at 40k miles they weren't covered. I informed him that the Jeep had etorque and the 48V battery was in fact covered by the 80k mile emissions warranty. He said no, both 12V batteries. I informed him that etorque models don't have the small aux battery. He was adamant it did. Even when I tried to explain it. I told him to get his lying tech away from my Jeep if he's claiming to have tested both 12v batteries and I'd just pick it up. Brought a new main 12v battery with me and changed it in the parking lot before I drove it home. Fortunately the 48v battery was fine. That Jeep never went back to the dealer and the 2022 JLUR that replaced it and my 2023 JT didn't even go back for their free oil changes.

Hey All,

I am rather excited to be bringing home my first Jeep and a substantial upgrade from my 09 Ranger. Only problem being that I need to add a hitch to the new truck. If I am understanding it all correctly, I have essentially 3 options.

(1) The classic ball on the bumper:

(2) This thing that I suspect is also attached to the bumper:
1745685394525-5f.jpg

(3) And the more expensive MOPAR version that has the best capacity:

I am not inclined to go with the bumper ball, but If there isn't a lot of difference between options 2 and 3 then what am I actually choosing between?

Thanks!
