In my personal opinion: Get the gun right.... Then work on the sights...
Getting the ‘gun right’ … for me… small hands, small wrists….. I like to say ‘touchy feely’ in the stores isn’t enough (per say - for me). Everything matters….
With less arm/hand strength…. recoil is another thing to consider.

Just the other day, test-touching a P365 and I couldn’t manipulate the slide lock (arthritis in my thumbs), I had to use both hands. 😳 The Canik MC9 was much easier to handle. I want to try the M&P Shield. We have a gun shop with an indoor range that I should be able to test shoot a few - just costs $. The hubby usually buys them first…. and I get to try them. 😉

He just recently bought a new piece…and I like it!!! I want to try (rent) the P365 and a M&P Shield. Still looking around….

Absolutely, gotta fire some rounds before you buy.

Polymer 9mm in subcompact/carry with adjustable/modular grip sizes for subcompact.

Hk VP9, SW M&P are the two that come to mind first for subcompacts/compact sizing. I've owned both. Very nice.

SW makes an EZ series too, which are tailored to easier manipulation iirc. Would help things, but backstrap safety could be a deal breaker.

Regardless, i would get something "optics ready" in whatever you end up getting.

So keep us in the loop! I'm interested in what you end up with.

My wifey has the MP 380 Bodyguard and the 9mm Shield. She carries the Bodyguard. And keeps the Shield on her side of the bed. The Bodyguard has a green laser, and the Shield has a red laser.

If you had a hard time with the P365, you will probably have a harder time with the Shield. They are both stiff as hell when new.

That said, were you trying to manipulate with an empty mag inserted? Both the P365 and Shield are easier releasing with a loaded mag and get exponentially easier after running 15-20 mags through either.

ETA: The Shield (Especially the Shield Plus) will be easier to shoot than the P365, much less muzzle flip.

ETA 2: You can always use the overhand method as well for releasing the slide on a reload.

The Bodyguard (with red laser) was my first carry gun. Bought it back in 2011. Once I got comfortable with carrying…..I moved up to 9mm (P938). We just sold the Bodyguard about a month ago….. ☺

The biggest concern with the P365… was pressing the slide lock button. If I wanted to lock the slide open, my thumbs just aren’t strong enough to push the button to lock the slide open. Racking was OK…. There’s probably an upgraded button I could get, but I haven’t looked.

I’ll definitely take a looky/feely at the Shield Plus. The Shield EZ isn’t dot ready… 😞

We’re going to a gun show on Friday. I’ll get to touchy/feely and test fit a bunch and hopefully narrow it down to what I want to test shoot. 😉
