$14 tire mount
$10-$15 hardware and $25 wheel net.
needs a shorter carriage bolt vs the one that came with the mount

Excellent idea!
My humble opinion, I would change the lock lugnut out for a normal nut. Drill through the carriage bolt at the end and insert a keyed lock to keep the nut from being unscrewed. Not perfect, just makes it a little harder to help keep the honest people being honest. 😂

That’s only a lug nut sized bolt, the hole you would have to drill would be small and you would need a pretty thin shanked lock, I think.
I figure maybe if you brought vise grips/pipe wrench to take off that nut, you would probably have a tool to defeat that keyed lock?
lug nut is there to slow you down or discourage taking the time to take it off, you really want that tire you’re probably going to get it.

No doubt on someone being able to get it. I was just saying add the lock for an additional deterrent. You did call it a temporary tire mount. 😂 It’s sad that we live in a time when you have to do things to keep people from stealing your stuff. It wasn’t that long ago when a spare tire could lay in the bed of the truck and no one even thought about having to protect it.

I guess that all depends on where you live. Where I live I could, but don’t from old habit, leave the key fob in the center console and not be concerned about someone driving off with the jeep. A small town in the center of Utah.

Why not underneath the bed?

The underbed mount on every truck operates on the same square shank jack handle winch system and none of them are locked. Spare tire theft just isn't a huge market.

I always love DIY mods - great idea!

When I needed a spare for my Avalanche I used...a freaking metal bar stool that I modified, then used ratchet straps and a bike lock to secure it to the bed hooks LOL...no one could actually see the bar stool, it was just used to give it that angle and height.

Take a truck with an already comically small bed... and reduce it to the size of the trunk of a full sized sedan? Seems legit.
