Hello all, Im new to the forum. I have a 2022 Gladiator and Im looking to put a RSI Smart Cap on the truck in the near future. I'm also planning a RTT mounted on top. My question is, has anyone mounted a RTT to a smart cap without using cross bars? I want to keep the tent as low to the cap and truck cab as possible. I want to be able to keep the truck in my garage and only have about 6' 11" to play with. I have a 2.5" lift on the truck with 37's. Is this possible, or wishful thinking.

Thanks for any input.

My Smart cap has a vent on top so I don't see it mounting to the tracks on top. Maybe other smart caps are flat without thr vent.

Yep, I noticed that also. I've also been looking at the OVS cap as well. It seems well built. Thanks for the reply.

is that measurement in your garage door, the height to the frame or the bottom of your door hanging below the frame when open? I’m asked cause you may be able to squeeze another inch or two by adjusting the stop position when open allowing the door to open slightly further than it currently is.

That vent will definitely hinder the ability for a flush mount.

My RTT has two base bars running parallel to the smartcap channels, but well inboard. The crossbars are needed to make the attachment perpendicular to the RTT base bars. You would need a RTT that mounted perpendicular to the smartcap channels to have any chance of attaching to the vertical bolts protruding out of the smartcap channels.

Maybe a Stealth Mount is the best solution, and adjust your garage door to maximize your headroom. Or set up a quick release system and remove it every time. I have to do that

Take a look at the top of my Alu-Cab "Canopy" cap. (Ignore the black lump at the center rear. That's a home brew rear view camera mount )

The top is flat except for the two slotted mounting rails. The fresh air vent is on the front of the cap.

The Alu-Cab is lighter than the RSI and comes as one piece. No gasketed joints to loosen and leak in the future.

The biggest problem with aluminum is, it work hardens over time and cracks. Hauling a load on an aluminum canopy, will lead to repairs down the road…It is light and easily repaired. Eventually though - aluminum’s too brittle…

Stainless steel will harden and crack over time, just like aluminum. The question is whether the design has enough margin to handle the load of a rooftop tent. I would venture to say that both RSI and Alu-Cab will say that their designs are good enough to handle the weight of a roof top tent.

I am sure there are members here that have both RSI and Alu-Cab caps with rooftop tents jnstalled for a lot of miles. Start a thread and ask if they are concerned.

I don’t really care if they are concerned! I gave up on aluminum canopies a long time ago, and I have a TIG welder in the shop.

The measurement is 7 feet to the frame so I have about 6' 11" of room to fit. The door when opened will stop above the frame

Fair enough. My garage door was set up to leave about 5” of the door below the frame when I bought my house. I tweaked it to open up above the frame and had much more room. Not everyone knows they can do this.
