161 HP and 310 lb-ft is plenty for a daily driven off-roader. It won’t be winning any racing circuits, but it’ll get the job done and way more efficiently than most of those ecological disaster diesel thingamajigies they put out. Plus you get a blowoff valve!!!!! That adds MAJOR cool points!!!!

I think I'd rather push this truck than have an anemic 2.8 in it.

But hey, we all like different things.

I can less about the power and more about the reliability.
The 3.6L is garbage for reliability.
I would love a 5.7L or a 4.6 straight 6.
Hell even the 3.8L minivan engine was pretty reliable.

You’d need to turn up the power. The diesel Colorado is an absolute dog and it has more power in a lighter truck.

Agreed. Like I just posted, go drive a diesel Colorado. They’re awful (all around) and in a lighter truck.

I'm opposite, lol. I will take more power and potentially less reliability. If I want to drive a tractor I'll go get on my John Deere 1025R and putz around the yard.

So far, nothing has indicated to me that my 3.6L is gonna lay down on me.

We have a mini van with the 3.8L. The Chrysler van people swear its gonna run half a million miles on oil changes. I'm exaggerating (a little) but I like that motor for what it is / what it's in. Ours is an '06 with 73,000 miles on it. Should run a while.

The 4.6l strokers are not reliable. Even through builders like Golen. I know several people who’ve had catastrophic failure with them at low mileage.

I’m starting to see a lot of 2020 3.6ls with 150k-200k on them and never had anything but regular maintenance. I’m glad I have a 2020. I’m keeping the oil changed with synthetic at 5k and crossing my fingers because I’m not easy on mine.

Even with 4.10s and a 6 speed manual, my JKU Rubicon was an absolute dog. Even on the stock 32s. I did appreciate how simple it was and how easy it was to work on. They did a lot better in the minivans.

A fella I know has a JKU on 37s. It's a 3.8L with the manual. He came with us to Moab a few years back. It performed without a hitch. Even managed to roll 80 down the interstate. Took him a while to get there

For sure on easy to work on. I always tell the ole lady her 3.8 would be so much better if it was jammed in their sideways (front wheel drive). Have to take the front tire and bottom cover off for damn near anything.

I have seen a couple of TJ's with the 2.8's and they are nothing to write home about. Has the "neat" cool factor for the sake of being different but not much else beyond that.

I mean hey, if I was building a clapped out run about (TJ / what's left of JK, etc) to ride into town to get a case of beer and pack of hotdogs then come back and leave it in the yard with no roof and doors - I'd consider a 2.8 diesel if I just had money laying around.

....but I'd probably shove an LS in it instead because we usually have one laying around.

And V8 noises.

I file those kind of things under "Passion Projects". They do not have to make sense to others, just to the one doing it and never try to make the financial math justification work because it almost never does.

There is always that one dude in a guy’s social circle that has 3+ “projects” going and is usually trying to splice something like a big block V8 into a Miata because he got both for free or next to cheap on Craigslist. Usually their old lady is on the cusp of leaving them because rent money is being spent on such things.
