There is always that one dude in a guy’s social circle that has 3+ “projects” going and is usually try to splice something like a big block V8 into a Miata because he got both for free or next to cheap on Craigslist. Usually their old lady is on the cusp of leaving them because rent money is being spent on such things.
So. Funny story.

The same buddy, his wife has the problem of too many projects as well. I think she has a tractor, a boat (or two), a '90s fullsize Blazer for hunting, a '90s Civic for dailying, a late model Mustang for cruising, and a '90s Chevy single cab truck.....with a big block and a 5 speed. Plus she's the reason they got turkeys and chickens and quail and all manner of living things.

I love them, lol.

Yeah the only time mine would overheat is when I pulled 7k up a long, steep grade in summertime heat. 242F was the magic temp...at that point it would start to retard power.

But the guys out in the Rockies would say the EcoDiesel overheated at the drop of a hat.

JTTowing3.webp
7k is heavy and that a lot of frontal area on that 8.5 wide trailer.
Read between the lines on the guys in the Rockies. High elevation, big wide heavy trailers, trying to push too hard.
Or overloaded fat pigs of a rig with big tires and usually no gears, trying to push too hard.

Don't get me wrong, I know heat is potential problem. But some, if not most is brought on by the owner.

The only way that would mean crap is if he did the slolam, braking tests, accelerating up a steep grade and so on.... Basically, what Jeep has to do.
I'm guessing @jmr is wanting to see how hot it gets. Not so much the other stuff.

I have seen a couple of TJ's with the 2.8's and they are nothing to write home about. Has the "neat" cool factor for the sake of being different but not much else beyond that.
I think the 2.8 Cummins would be great in a lighter 2dr, say TJ/LJ or older. It would be a good crawler with the low down torque.
If course, if I was going to the trouble of swapping one in, I'd pump up the power. Then again, maybe find a wrecked EcoDiesel.

More than likely, if swapping, I'd use an LV1.

But that's part of it. If they don't take the same grades at elevation .........

I could run one in the flats if KS and say it does fine. Tow the same thing under the same test conditions.

Oh shit. You’re right. I only have three vehicles under construction though and 2/3 are drivable right now. One of those two being “drivable”. 😂

Yes it would be interesting to know just for grins.

I'm curious how AMW got 425 HP from their 5.7 ?

Who doesn’t have a “project” or three? 🤣
For vehicles, I can't afford that life. I have one, and I have two 'dailys' that do not need work beyond general maintenance.

Now, household / homestead projects....

....drowning in those 😂

I think it was probably a vocal few.

Yep, that and you need to learn to drive a diesel different than a gasser. Plus it's a small diesel, not a big Cummins.

We're not looking for DRC to certify the tow rating and such. We're just looking to see if the chassis can reject the heat the 5.7 Hemi is gonna make.

I say it can. I'd bet money that the EcoDiesel makes considerably more heat than a NA Hemi. The Eco has a turbo, that just a big heat source. Plus it uses heat and compression to ignite the fuel. I'd hazard a guess, the Eco makes 2x or 3x the BTUs that the 5.7 Hemi does.

Wonder why the 5.7 had a higher tow rating in the Ram 1500, than the EcoDiesel did???

JLU and JT same width.
A 2026 JLU Rubicon with a 3.6 can tow 5,000 pounds.

If you don't tow, but you do off-road, and want a V8, buy a Wrangler.
You will have a fair amount of cargo space, the same cabin area, but much better for off-road experiences.
3 inches longer rear seat area is not the same cabin area. Longer wheelbase is better for certain types of obstacles
