That’s 1 good thing about my recycled/crushed concrete driveway. It acts like a constant chalk test. I can see exactly where my tires ride at different PSI just by looking back at the Jeep. 😂

OK. I'm only going to say what I'm about to say in this thread because this seems like a safe space. I would never admit to this outside of here.

I'm a poser. I don't need the capabilities I have with my Gladiator. The only times I touch the transfer case shifter are to drive on the beach or at a campsite. I could easily do what I do in a Subaru Forester. But to me my Gladiator is the coolest vehicle that I have ever owned and I love it and plan on keeping it forever. I have had and I'll have many other squishy comfy vehicles that my wife can also drive, but Gladys is mine and I love her.

So most of my driving is on the road. I have Cooper Discover STT Pro MT tires in 305/60r18 because I like them and I think they fit the truck perfectly. And I air them up to 48 psi because it feels better to me on the road. They just roll better and feel better in turns. No, I didn't do the chalk test. It's my truck and I like the way it feels.

Hey if it works for you and it’s within the capabilities of what you do with the truck then do your thing. Nobody is really going to judge you unless you’re handing out advice that is just flat wrong.

I mean...

If the steel belts keep the tread square, therefore avoiding uneven wear on just the crown by overinflating...

Then overinflating doesn't give better MPG, because the steel belts keep the whole tread in contact with the road anyway.

So that's the first logic fault... Didn't really look any further.
Yeah, didn't quite sound convincing to me either, but it's also possible I didn't quite understand what he was trying to say when I asked about over-inflation and he responded by saying "but there's steel in there, it's all steel"...

There’s no shame in anyone’s game. No one has an obligation to be rockcrawling or overlanding. 90% of my driving is going to pick up my son or hauling bikes to the trail and just being able to throw the sunrider top down on the way to Food Lion justifies the truck imo. People see my truck at gas stations and ask if time preparing for the apocalypse. I tell them I’m preparing to go sit on the beach and drink beer.

One important note about chalk testing. If you’re running a stockish size tire, you certainly can start with or just go by the vehicle placard. The chalk test is just establish a baseline when you’re running a size tire for which there’s no obvious data. I went from 32s to 37” mud tires, beadlocks and probably 600lbs of additional static load and there was no guidance for tire pressure except on forums like this one which was actually pretty close to my findings.

For a Toyota, or any other IFS vehicle, that
works as they are better suited for soaking up bumps and lumps in those vehicles. For a solid axle vehicle the lower air pressure helps with ride quality. I’m not gonna judge them for running what they run but I’d never run mine that high. Hiway and on road is 35-38psi for my 37” Milestars. Off-road depending on what the trail is like I’ll run 18-@22. This is only because I have standard duty wheels without bead retention technology. On a beadlock or beadgrip I’d be down 10-15 all day on a trail without worries. And I’d have one heck of a more comfy ride than they would at a higher psi. To each their own.
Interesting, makes sense: IFS vs. solid axle, as others are pointing out here. I'm running Method bead grip wheels, which means technically I can air down lower than without. But up till now, since my off-roading is generally on easy stuff and not a whole lot of technical rock crawling, I've never needed to air down lower than, like 18-20 psi.

If it’s dry, there are no hard trails at Hollister (with the one exception of Tank Trap which requires a lot more than a built jeep). Run whatever pressure you want there, doesn’t really matter.

Some of this may come from old tires like the original BFG KOs which derived their E ratings from internal pressure, not from a particularly thick carcass. I had a set of those on a Tacoma and the MPG was dogshit at less than 50psi. Proper modern tires designed from the ground up for off roading are not like that. These old pros may not be interested in updating their beliefs though.
Re: Hollister, which was bone dry, this was my experience: everything was pretty tame. Which, admittedly, is generally what I'm satisfied with. Not doing a whole lot of technical rock crawling, just a whole bunch of dirt roads of varying degrees of crappiness.

I'm wondering how my Toyo Open Country AT/iii compares to the old KO2s in this sense. My sense is the E rating comes from a thick sidewall, but just a guess, really.

Yeah when I pushed the offset out 2.5 inches and added 2 inches to the tire width I added a 2-inch scrub radius. I am way out of factory spec so there is no real data like you guys are saying for my specific wheel and tire combo.

When I first got the tires I aired them down to 28psi like the conventional wisdom here and it felt like the tires were made of chunky peanut butter. 48psi is what I settled on after driving around for a while.

Not saying the original offroad guys from the OP in this thread are right or that's what anyone should do, I'm just saying anecdotally that it feels good to me for my daily pavement driving.

Those guys are morons. It sounds like they’re extrapolating high load high pressure commercial tires down to lite duty trucks because they’re “big” tires. Dealerships do this all the time too and they’re idiots. They look at the sidewall and load rating which means jack shit on a lite duty truck. Even my bike tires, I ignore the sidewall and tune the PSI for my weight, riding profile, casing design and terrain.

Putting 50 psi on 35s on a Tacoma, I’m surprised isn’t exceeding the sidewall rating. I would say it’s dangerous. The high load tires on some military and industrial vehicles are totally different and designed to carry much higher pressures. The average fire truck weighs between 20 and 30 tons. Extrapolating this to passenger vehicles is the height of dangerous stupidity. In the FD we were trained to avoid facing these tires head on when fighting brake fires because the already higher pressures + additional heat can cause the steel belts to explode out from the tire. They’re completely different tires. When has anyone ever seen passenger vehicle tire chunks all over the interstate?

If you chalk test your own tires, and everyone should, you can see the contact patch. You’re never going to see something drastic like a little tiny contact patch in the middle. What you’ll see is the edges shrink or grow with higher or lower pressure. On my Gladiator, even with all the crap living on the truck, I run around 27-29 psi. I’ve always had very even wear. On oversized tires you ignore the vehicle placard and on any vehicle you always ignore the sidewall rating. There’s no real benefit to adding more pressure. It’s not like more is somehow better. If you’re carrying a load or have weight on the tongue, you may need more pressure than normal, but we’re talking a few PSI. I run 29-30 when towing and loaded.

There’s no school of thought that I’m aware of that calls for more pressure off road. I don’t even know if this is a thing in off road racing. The Humvee has a central inflation system to reduce pressure off road, not increase it. For years I didn’t air down because I didn’t have a reliable way to air back up. With my PowerTank, I now always air down on trails. The difference is amazing and it’s not even traction which does improve substantially with low pressure. Washboard roads will literally destroy your vehicle. It’s why most aftermarket suspension manufacturers moved away from heim joints for control arms and back to bushings. Anything you can do to reduce the transmission of shock into the vehicle is a good thing. I think about how much shock is transmitted into my enduro Mtb riding over rocks and roots. I have to replace bearing yearly. I can feel the shock in my body. Now add 4500lbs to that. Off roading wears out everything. Washboards disappear at <10psi. It’s so much better and you don’t have these violent stutters moving through the whole body of the truck. I can’t imagine airing up to 35-50 PSI and driving down a rutted out fire road. The truck would shake apart. The rear hard top would be loose. The rack system would be loose. Everyone would be miserable. Don’t do it. 😂
All points well taken. And let me reiterate: their approach seemed so far out of compliance with everything I had ever read, heard or experienced first hand regarding tire pressure that I couldn't help but doubt it. Which is why I brought thee issue to this forum, and why I'm glad I did, seeing the fruitful discussion it has prompted.

But just in the spirit of being a good neighbor and stick up for theses guys a bit: they're the farthest thing from "morons" or "idiots." They're all older dudes who have been at this for a long time and didn't seem to have any reason to be "messing with me" in the context we were in. But yeah, maybe they were erroneously extrapolating their experience training drivers of heavy rescue vehicles out to light trucks. Would seem strange to me, given they also teach civilian off road driving and recovery courses, but it's not unfathomable.

Anyway, I super appreciate everyone's insights here, it's very helpful for me as I'm starting to do more off-roading, preparing for open-ended, trans-continental overlanding travel, and wanting to be sure I'm doing things right. Just wanna say it wasn't my intention to make this an opportunity to dump on a bunch of people no one has ever met; I just wanted to tap all the experience on this forum so I could learn some things. I succeeded.

Tire pressure is always a discussion point. Understand the tire is part of the suspension. It flexes with imperfections in the road to help provide a smooth ride. There is much is much written about the chalk test to find the right on road cold tire pressure.

Off Road is a different matter. if you are aa tread lightly type, lower Air pressures help preserve the trails and provide more traction. You can google tire pressure foot print and see the difference at each PSI setting the size of the foot print. Simple example on my BFG 39s I have twice the foot print at 10 PSI as I do at Road Pressure of 35.

Off road I use a simple rule of thumb. OEM wheel/tire run 12-15 psi, 20 on NFS fire road.
35-37 inch tire 10-12 wheeling on rocks and 15-20 on NFS roads
40s 8-10 wheeling technical and 15-20 on NFS roads.

MY BFG 39s i run at 35 PSI on road on a 6800# JTRD. off road anywhere between 8 and 12 PSI.


Running over inflated on road leads to bad tire wear and short tread life. Lots of folks teach..... some even know what they are talking about. Much like a forum group.......

I've been running my tires at 35psi for around town and on the highway and it has seemed to be the sweet spot for me. Off road, 18-20 always seems more or less in the ballpark, at least to my untrained sensibilities. Your benchmarks sound good ... but it's clearly time for me to do a chalk test, and then do a bit more experimenting off road.

Checked out that training course. Looks legit ... way beyond my current experience and capability level at this stage, for sure. But I'll definitely check out all the great video links they have on their website (including one on air pressure!)

The chalk test doesn't lie. But it does actually tend to give you a range of air pressure where the entire tread of the tire evenly contacts the road. Within that range you can go up or down to where you are happiest with the ride.

You can also watch your tire pressures. They should increase between 10% and 15% from cold to hot, that increase coming from the tires building temperature. That is another good way to confirm that your tires are at the right pressure.

There’s always been a disconnect with the bigger tires because they often have really high load ratings that generally increase with size to support large heavy duty trucks. Then they’re run on lite duty vehicles. This causes a lot of confusion because most 37” tires have an E rating with an 80psi load pressure. Then people run them on TJs. I think it was Milestar or someone who started making oversized tires with lower load ratings because most applications simply don’t need that heavy duty of a tire. Tire places will mount a giant tire on a 2 door jeep and jack up the pressure like they’re going on an F-350.

Another thing I’ve found on the Gladiator on my KM3s: I was rotating (with 5) like crazy. I got lazy and rotating these heavy tires is a pain in the ass, so I’ve not kept up with rotations as frequently as I should. I don’t notice any weird wear. They tend to wear really evenly regardless. My TJ would cup and scallop and just butcher tires. The Gladiator is much better. Of course I didn’t get lazy until they were worn down pretty well. I wouldn’t slack off rotating new mud terrain tires.

Also these tires on AEV beadlocks are the easiest tire/combo to balance that I’ve ever seen. The tire shop was blown away at how little weight they take. It’s half of what the stock wheels/tires had. Tires that tend to stay balanced helps on the wear. The point is that depending on the wheel/tire combo and the vehicle you may have a pretty wide margin for pressure on these more aggressive tires.

I just removed a set of 35" Goodyear Ultraterrains with 90k miles on them and I only rotated them once.
