I don't think this is laziness, I think it's weighing your options. I would venture to say traveling so far is mentally lazy (maybe physically demanding, but not having that negotiation first locally before running to another dealer hundreds of miles away seems counterintuitive if you're trying to save money). What's 20 hours of your time worth (Not including overnights)? Plus hotels, wear and tear on a vehicle you might be trading in, tolls, food, etc.Laziness is expensive...
Thinking you're going to outsmart a guy by traveling 10 hours to get a car slightly cheaper is expensive. I literally logged onto this forum in a dealership on Long Island, told them I was gonna drive my a$$ to NC, and I had no issues doing so to save me even as little as 50 bucks. Guess who walked out with a deal equal to the ones on this forum.
There's all different ways to purchase. I don't necessarily blame you for giving up on the negotiation game if you're in a position to do so, but for me, that would be time off work, money to travel, etc. All that would come off my "cheaper" vehicle savings. So why not just prep yourself, go into the dealership fighting, and come out a winner? If you don't win, then so be it, but I'll be damned if I won't try to maximize my savings by attempting to beat down local dealerships first.
And up until I walked into a dealer with a build sheet and armed with more information that a sales manager even knows what to do with, I would've agreed. Heck, I even reached out to Travis first. I guess the negotiator in me didn't want to back down from a fight and that negotiation took all of 30 minutes before they shook my hand.I'm in SoCal and will be driving through Vegas on the way back from picking mine up in ID. If you aren't willing to drive more than 10 minutes to a dealer your options are limited and you are going to be stuck haggling/negotiating. You have to run the numbers if it makes sense or not (including time wasted haggling with a dealer). A few hours of driving to save a lot makes sense to many of us.
For my LE, I'm around $7k under MSRP (which every SoCal dealer is charging). That's a lot of plane tickets.
