It seems to me that bed rack manufacturers are over complicating bed racks and missing many customer needs. Too much focus on overlanding and attachments of fancy accessories. I think I'm not the only one that wants the following:
  1. High rack, slightly above soft-top roof line
  2. Simple with few as possible bars (less bars on sides so can reach inside, and less bars on top so can stand in bed)
  3. Design follows lines of Jeep
  4. Supports a simple tonneau cover that maximizes space
  5. No holes all over the place for attachments, but rather solid looking
What would I do with it?
  • Occasionally:
    • Multiple Kayaks and SUPs on top
    • Multiple bikes inside (tonneau cover rolled up)
    • Store large items in bed (tonneau cover rolled up)
  • Daily:
    • Store stuff in trunk under tonneau cover to keep it dry
Here are some pictures of the closest thing I found out there, which I actually really like, but the problems with this product are:
  1. Too expensive at over $4,000
  2. Tonneau cover is so fancy it significantly takes away from bed space
  3. Not sure if they sell it as pictured with less bars all over the place, as most pictures of this product have extra bars everywhere for accessories. This is only picture I found as configured. Even this configuration has the extra horizontal bars on the sides I would rather not have.
Come on competition, if you build it we will come.

Imagine this with a kayak and two SUPs on top and five bikes inside, or with tonneau cover on and groceries inside or large bags with equipment.

You just described my needs. I have a RR hard folding cover and would like to still be able to use it.

check out the @Maximus-3 overland rack.......not sure if it will allow a tonneau cover or not, but fits your other needs, especially the fit profile of the JT....soon to be released to all (they are contacting personnel on contact list right now.

I went with the KBVoodoo Hig Rise Rack for my needs. I can put the bikes up there easily. The tonneau still rolls up, not as easy as without the rack, but it can be done. I have not tried to put kayaks up there, I have a trailer for those.

If the legs were 1.5 to 2 inches taller, the cover would roll up without a problem.

At some point I want to modify this rack with hinges, and 2 gas struts so I can angle it out of the way for easier access to the cover and bed.

My solution is expensive, but It's going to be exactly what I need. A Diamondback hard tonneau for daily/weekly/day tripping.
A hitch mounted cargo tray with weatherproof bag for storage.
The Diamondback frontrunner rack:
Thule ski holders for winter
A scuba tank rack with skinny pod for diving gear
As needed, a cargo basket / cargo pod.

Overlanding - I dunno 100% yet. Ideal would be a Zroadz with a Bestop softopper, but I may go with a custom-footed rack mounted to the Diamondback - like an Zroadz or Fishbone full height. Whichever is cheaper :)
