I hade this issue when importing a brand new Audi from another state. No smog places had the car in their database to run, because any sold in state had it done factory. It took time to find a shop to do it.

DMV site says smog not needed since Jan 2019 for cars less than 4 model years old

Be prepared to pay in excess of 700.00 dollars and that is just license fees not including any sales tax they hit you with. Got to love Ca.

Toss the gas engine into a creek at the border. Take a angle grinder to the foot wells so that you can drive it around flinstone style. Great gob at saving the indigenous dust mites that are make believe.

Hide your wallet. I just bought my JT and thankfully I live in San Bernardino County and bought it in LA County. Saved $600.00 in sales tax. California registeres the Gladiator as a truck, and a 4X4 so there is a premium here.

You will also need to schedule a “visual inspection” by someone at the DMV office.

Someone comes out, checks the odometer reading, the emissions sticker, and signs a form you will need to present when you go pay for the new tags.

What dealer gave you the great deal on a Mojave so you went to Idaho instead of buying in CA?

I was in Idaho for the summer but got good deal through Young's who were great to work with (sales guy Brennan was super responsive and the whole team were excellent).

I have bought five vehicles out of state and driven them back to California and registered them no problem.

You can find all available info very quickly via a google search, or:

-visual safety inspection (one time only. Not annually like a lot of other states, which takes 5 minutes at the DMV one early morning)

-a smog check ( that literally almost all smog stations can do. Anyone that tells you otherwise just doesn't know any better)

-difference in taxes paid to purchasing county, versus registering county. Sometimes, you pay more to purchase out of state with taxes, and you do NOT get a refund in California. If you underpay elsewhere, for example Oregon, then you need to pay the CA DMV the difference.
In Texas and Arizona, I paid MORE in sales tax and thus had to sacrifice the difference upon registering here in CA. Ca does not owe you a refund on taxes you paid to another state. Of note: I had to overpay to expensive tax counties on two VIPERS to two other states. That .25 and .50 tax made a difference when it's Viper price tags. lol

-Registration fees for CA, which can be steep.

-Proof of insurance and they usually request to see Bill of Sale to verify taxes paid to other state.

Went through this painfully.

1. smog.
2. Visual DMV VIN verification
3. Weighed
4. DMV wanted my bill of sale and title (Navy FCU had to send it)
5. Make an appt to get your Real ID. Slide in your registration paperwork at the same time (instead of waiting hours in line since DMV does not do appts right now)

I paid LA County tax when I bought it. 90 day temp tag out of Arizona. Ended up being about 4k cheaper OTD than socals dealers best offer.
