I'm pretty sure that's what Lindsay is doing and I'm more than a little annoyed. They want me to drive 3 hours to their dealership and then I'm basically at their mercy. They know a customer isn't going to make that drive without leaving a dealership with something.

The last conversation I had with them I told them I wanted the OTD we discussed in writing. I asked for the sales manager to email it to me. I've heard NOTHING back from them. I just sent them a polite follow up, but I'm not expecting much. I think this deal is dead.

At this point I'm thinking of waiting out my lease, it ends on April 29, and then waiting for Memorial Day weekend. I'll try to get the best deal I can on a Sport or Willy's Gladiator then. In the meantime, I'll join Tread Lightly.

Look into the affiliate program. Depending on your employer you might not have to, I was about to sign up but turns out my company is under the affiliate program.

I would highly recommend dealing with Tri-City in Eden, NC. Just over the VA state line. No BS and straight up pricing info. I think they do 7% under invoice and 8% under invoice with their financing. Site sponsor also. They are who I eventually made the deal with and worth the drive.

Finally got an email from the salesman @ Lindsay. The OTD their giving me is $36,696, but they're not willing to send me a breakdown because " I do not send breakdowns via internet because of the different rebates I use to get to my low price. I don't want to teach another dealership how to sell you a car. "

I just don't know if I'm willing to accept this. The fees they're not willing to send me are basically just over $4,500 and I think that's too high for a sale in Virginia. Sales tax here is 4.15%. (The price we landed on was the advertised $32,206.

Rough math say $1320 in sales tax unless you have a trade that gets you credit to lower it. That leaves roughly $3200 unknown. If I was to guess, they are rolling back in the delivery charge and about $1400 in doc fees and/dealer fees.

They are playing f*ck, f*ck games if you ask me.

Here's my rough math on the fees:
Selling Price $32,206.00
Sales Tax
Average combined sales tax in Virginia
$1,336.55
(4.15%)
Title Fee
$10.00
Registration Fee
$40.75
Doc Fee
$599.00

Estimated Out-the-Door$34,192.30

I got that from an OTD calculator at yourautoadvocate.com. If I had to guess, they rolled the destination charge back into the fees. I replied back with my info and a request to breakdown the fees and keep their rebates to themselves. I'm trying to be as polite as possible, I don't think I have anything to gain by being confrontational.

You need to correct your math. Every time the dealer posts a 'sale price' on the website, you're bound to add the destination fee to it. That's 1,495. You got the doc fee wrong, too - it's right on the website: 799. Tax rate at VA is 5.3% (not 4.5%) so here you go:

Sale Price: 32,206
Destination: 1,495
Dealer Fee: 799
SuM: 34,500.
Sales Tax: 1828.5
TOTAL 36,328

Looks like they told you the OTD is $36,696 so the reminder (368) are some DMV fees (I did not include them in a taxable amount as I never know if they are or not).

Thanks for the feedback. The autoadvocate calculator gave that 4.15% tax rate, and that's the same amount that I see on Virginia's DMV site. The auto tax rate is different than the state sales tax. Here are the figures the salesman gave me this afternoon:

32206 sale price
1985 freight (destination + ???)
895 process (dealer fee + ???)
Sum: 35086
1,456 tax " ("Virginia levies a 4.15% Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax")
183 tags ( I don't know if these are taxable either)
TOTAL: 36,725

He's quoting me 36,695

The MSRP on the window sticker is $40,610. I ran this on the forum's spreadsheet and it gave me a dealer invoice of $37,994. (That dealer invoice is before the Destination Charge)

So, any final thoughts? I'm going to be giving him an answer tomorrow. I'm leaning towards pulling the trigger on this.

If I’m doing the math right, that’s 15% under invoice (1 - 32k/38k)! The destination is currently 1,495, no matter where you live, so the salesman is either adding stuff in or made a mistake.

Are you certain that your build on the forum spreadsheet is the same thing the dealer quoting? That would be my only real concern at this point.

I've gone through the window sticker line by line and gotten the numbers to be pretty close. My real concern is that I can't pin the dealership down with anything in writing. He wouldn't even close the deal over the phone. My local dealership will close over the phone and online. Lindsay wants me to drive over 3 hours with nothing but a phone guarantee that the $36,695 will be good to go when I show up.

So what is the Delta between your local dealer and potentially the deal with the one that is 3 hours away?

You got options, just not preferred ones. Obviously are not getting a warm fuzzy from the dealership 3 hours away. Even if you were to make the drive and the numbers are not there, you are not obligated to take it and can walk away from it.

Well, I think I just avoided 6-7 hours of driving and a mountain of frustration and anger. My local dealer was offering me about 2% below dealer invoice. They were very courteous and were frankly stunned at the deal Lindsay was offering me. I told them I was still going on Sunday to check out Lindsay and that if it fell through I might still follow up with them on Monday.

A little while ago I decided to check out Lindsay at the Better Business Bureau. I've used their site to check out some of my local dealers and it was always an A or A+ rating with 3.5-4.5 star ratings. My jaw dropped when I saw Lindsay's F rating. The customer reviews were just as bad. The kicker was seeing the name of the dealer who I've been working with show up in one of the reviews. They seem like they're a bait and switch factory.

Let me know where you end up. I also would love to find a barebone gladiator. The price you mentioned seemed very reasonable.

The deal never happened. After I saw the rating and feedback at BBB I decided to bail. I'm going to stick with my Willys and just put some money into maintaining the old Silverado I have.

I would not base my decision on a BBB rating.
If you look at the complaints, most are from people that were naive.
I did not see any complaints regarding failed to honor a quoted price.

Don't get me wrong. I think they will try to tack on every charge they can, but it is the buyers obligation to make sure that does not happen. You have the check, you have the power.

Dealing with them is not for the faint of heart. Your decision, but my guess is they would sell you the vehicle for the quoted price. They have what you want and you have what they want. If they don't sell it to you for the quoted price, walk away.

I was willing to buy local for a little more, but Lindsay was $3,500 cheaper. I bought from them.

Just have to be on your toes, especially with high volume dealers.
