Rattle from engine when accelerating (sounds like keys)

Anyways, since I've been wide open throttling I've noticed this engine is shit after 75 to 80mph range lol. Wide open in 4th gear and it barely accelerates when I'm over 80. I just googled the top speed and it said 97. Maybe downhill and if I make a ski helmet big enough for the front end then maybe 97mph. Anyone hit 97mph?????

Do you have a manual or auto?

I haven't had mine over 85, but no trouble getting there with the 8speed and 4.10 on stock 33" tires. There really isn't much difference in seat of the pants feels between ~60% and 100% pedal.

I have a manual, willys. So no max tow, I'm sure the bigger gears help a lot. And I have the mud tires it came with.

When I had my JK with the manual there were definitely times where an in between gear would have been nice.

Learn how to rev-match if you aren't already, and don't be afraid to drop 2 gears. You might have to experiment a bit to see what works.

What does rev match have to do with wide open throttle? Im not trying to go 90 everytime on the highway, i just never noticed how weak it was near the top speed.

So I'm at the dealer and I'm going through all the issues i was having and the guy behind the counter asks me what octane i use lol. I said, " 87 is the lowest right and that is what is recommended in the manual, right? " i can see where this going... and then i tell him about the rotten egg smell and he looks at me like im crazy cause its a new jeep. I drove 60 miles for this? It didnt smell and it passed emissions so what can I make them do??? They said to use a different gas station because the quality of the gas could be different even though it's a top tier gas station. Idc anymore at this point as long as the engine doesnt start pinging again. The cat warranty is 8yrs or 80k miles which he confirmed.

I know I've had mine up to 95 - could have been a bit more but I was paying too close attention to things around me at that speed.

What does rev match have to do with wide open throttle? Im not trying to go 90 everytime on the highway, i just never noticed how weak it was near the top speed.

If wide open throttle isn't moving it you might need to downshift (and rev match).

So this is gettin interesting, I've noticed a pop or puff noise if I just tap the gas pedal once while I'm in neutral. I'm starting to think this is a backfire in the intake? Which means I'm running lean? Which could also cause detonation? But it runs fine if I dont initially tap on the gas pedal quickly, just accelerate normally. I cant tap and floor it because it's a manual so I dont know if it the puff noise would happen in gear. Thought?

It's probably just air "whooshing" in.

Backfire through the intake is very loud, and I've only seen it when the distributor was put in way off, which doesn't apply here.

If you really believe the mixture is off, start monitoring your O2 sensor readings. There's several OBDII apps that can do it.

So its normal? The sound def sounds more like an exhale then inhale.

are you asking about the short hesitation? Thats what i call it. May be a totally diff thing tho.

Not the hesitation, it literally makes a very audible PUFF noise over the engine noise from the passenger side.

Open the air box, see what it sounds like then.

A backfire with the sound deadening these have in the intake would be pretty muffled, but it's doubtful that's happening.
Even my Javelins if I make them backfire with the air cleaner on would be pretty muffled. Not a loud POP at all, but take the air cleaner off and it was an unmuffled POP.
We used to make engines backfire on purpose to blow things out back in the 70s and with the air cleaner on (for safety) it wasn't all that loud.

I agree - use some software - AlfaOBD or jscan or even a free software that will give O2 sensor information might help.

I've never romped mine in neutral (it's an auto) but if I romp it hard in gear, it BOGS - not a backfire, but like it's not getting any fuel until it finally catches up. You don't want to have to nail it to get away from a tight situation - you'll never make it.
