@ShadowsPapa I generally agree with your posts, but I think you’re wrong to say people want white collar gigs AND high pay. People want white collar gigs, full stop. Social norms established 60 years ago in a far poorer (and, for many, much less free) America taught people that going to college and getting an office job were signs of success and status. That’s led, of course, to an oversupply of college degrees. The market has long since responded, paying skilled tradesman way more than entry level office workers outside of some STEM fields, but civil society hasn’t. If we’re going to re-balance things the best thing we can do, in all seriousness, is encourage our daughters, our country clubs, our church deacons, etc. to associate marketable, skilled, blue collar positions as higher status than entry level social science grads. And I say all that as a social science grad and someone who works in university admin :)

You also have to factor in the abundance of colleges pushing useless liberal arts type degrees. They are selling young kids a dream that is about as realistic as a 40 acre spread in NYC. Academia needs some serious reform and tech colleges that teach actually useful skills should be given funding.

Can't tell you how many of my peers I see working dead end retail jobs in the hopes that their artsy side thing takes off (protip: no it won't).

In my professional opinion, they're actually selling the parents, who generally have the cash. Yes some kids just take on loans and don't understand the magnitude of that decision, but a lot of the 'Club Med College' amenities and offerings are to sell the parents that they really are providing the very best for Little Johnny.

Maybe true where you are - but of the college kids I know, mommy and daddy didn't have the funding.......... so little Johnny has loans up the wazoo.
Yeah, I agree - it's promoted more to parents - and parents often "suggest" a route and have some part in the financing.
(although Ann Landers years ago clearly stated to parents - once high school is done, you have no further financial or other obligation - if they want college, it's not a parent's "duty".)
My parents didn't pay, my first wife and I didn't pay for our kid's college, and as far as I recall her parents didn't pay her way, either.

The problem is that a college education doesn't mean you can actually DO the job. It means you read books, remembered things and passed tests.
I used to work with a guy who was at the time a brother in law. He ran a computer and consulting firm. It was a graduate of ISU's comp sci program. When he hired help for his business (programming, consulting, custom work, etc.) he decided to hire ISU grads - sort of pay 'em back.
He had hired me just because I picked it all up so fast and could be creative and think my way through solutions. I solved puzzles and devised solutions.
When he let his 4th degreed employee go, he was telling me he was done with that train of thinking - he said they had the degree, they talked the talk, but when he sat them down to do something, they were stuck. They could only do what they learned AS they learned and if anything deviated off that "laminated bullet point list", they were done. If it hadn't been on a test or in a book, they couldn't think through it.

Guys, this conversation is getting a little too substantive and real. Please get back on to first world problem talk. When are the Red Chinese labor camps going to produce the parts for our high dollar mall cruisers?

I drive by the dealer every day and see it sitting in the lot.
I laughed at this.

At least you see your truck sitting there, for many of us it is just an abstract idea in our hearts and in the Jeep database 'ready to enter the build process soon'. You're close than a lot of us bud.

As a first gen college attendee, grad, and .... who also used to work on the line at an automotive plant, I have all the thoughts on the school topics. But... there is no fun in any of that.

I bet the headaches were caused by Earl. OMG. You know Earl. Second shift guy, works on the line in the suspension area? Always has the torque wrench with him, even when he isn't the one who is torqueing the front suspension bolts to spec. You know him. YES THAT GUY. No wonder there are so many headaches.... LOL

Ordered mine on January 20th, didn't take delivery until April 2nd so I know your frustration.
When you do get your Jeep, all your frustration will melt into sheer joy.
It's worth the wait ?
Yes sir!
