Good morning (here, at least)!

I am preparing to buy my first set of wheels. I have the greenlight from my wife, and October is the month that its happening. BUT...I have never bought new wheels before, and am a little uncertain of how to go about it. I am going to buy the FUEL Shok D665, 17x9, -12 offset.

1. Where do you guys buy? Should I get them shipped to me, or sent to a store?
2. I can get them mounted and balanced real cheap on my nearby base...but do I need to see the dealer for the sensors? Do I even bother (what do I lose if I dont?)?
3. Any experience with these wheels, or these measurements?
4. Lastly....Is there anything Im not thinking about?

Thank you.

I’m also going to buy new Fuel wheels, the D785. I got a quote from Real Truck. They are on the forum. They gave me a great quote with a nice discount. Problem is, mine are on back order, like most things, and I can’t even order them for a month or so. Sucks, but first world problems, Lol, right? I was going to have them shipped to me and then take them to my local tire store for install(I’m sure you can have them drop shipped too). I have a Willys with the 32” MTs, and I’m happy with them. So I’m just going to use those until it’s time to replace. Hope you don’t have to wait for yours! Post pics once they’re on!

Go to Discount Tire. Have it all done in one place. They are a sponsor here. Contact them for pricing, and they can set you up at a local store. If you have issues, then there is only one place responsible to fix it. You don't have to worry about shipping or damage, or finding a place to mount them.

To answer your questions:

1.) Depends on where you can get the best deal. I've ordered my last 2 sets of wheels/tires from www.wheelhero.com. Those guys are awesome. I could have gotten the same wheel/tire combo locally at Discount Tire, but when I called Wheel Hero to check the backspacing of the wheels I was going to get, they offered to take another $200 off the price. I got them mounted/balanced, nitrogen filled, new TPMS sensors, (20) locking splined black lugs, and a free lug tool, all shipped by FedEx to my front door. Both times I've ordered from them, the wheels were very well protected during shipping, and arrived with no issues.
2.) No, you don't have to go to the dealer for TPMS sensors. Most reputable tire shops should offer new TPMS sensors. These are fairly generic since most cars have them now. If you don't install sensors on your new wheels, you'll get an error code on your dash. Don't bother trying to reinstall your sensors from your factory wheels onto your new rims. Most tire shops won't do this anyway since they can't guarantee the old sensors once they're reinstalled. If they install a new sensor, they'll warranty that.
3.) Sorry, no experience w/this wheel.
4.) Not that I can think of, but someone else will weigh if there is.

Congrats and good luck.

One other thing.....If you do order online, make sure to contact the dealer to confirm they have the items in stock. I usually run Toyo Open County M/T's. Wheel Hero's site didn't show any indication of them being on backorder. When I called them, they confirmed they were on indefinite backorder at that time. The only tire I could get in the size I wanted at that time was a BFG KM3 M/T. So far, very happy with them.

Now I know I might get heat for this but I bought my wheels and tires off eBay in august 2019… I purchased 4 fuel d634 in bronze I paid 274.33 per tire and I bought 5 copper STT pro 37x12.5r17 I paid 338.42 per tire. They were all new no issues at all with shipping and they were in stock… I just did a quick search on fuel shok I saw some in stock… in addition if you plan on hitting serious trails I would do what I kick myself for not doing which is going with a beadlock from the beginning it’s a little more $$$$ but if you can swing I would… you don’t live with regret and have to “talk to the wife” with the eventual purchase of another set however far down the road.

I would absolutely buy off eBay from sellers with reputable histories. I put my stock JTR wheels on my daughter's JK, and I ordered a 5th stock wheel off eBay for her spare. Got an awesome price on a take-off rim, and it was in better condition than my factory rims.

Hey, aint nothing wrong with ebay. I have a good buddy of mine that orders all of his stuff like that too, and it seems to work out. FB Market Place seems like a hot spot too (thats where I got my tires).

That same buddy of mine is in the "Buy once, cry once" mindset, which I totally understand. But...I dont know if beadlocks will ever be worth it for me. I have had my Jeep for about 3 months/4k miles now, and so far haven't had any problems running 15PSI on stock wheels, the two times Ive gone out so far (so it's not like Im out all the time or anything).

I know beadlocks are good, but might be more than I need.
