I don't intend on doing a ton of intentional offroading, but would like to have a decent recovery kit should I need it. What are you guys carrying with you? Any good kits out there that aren't a fortune? I saw Factor 55 has what appears to be an extensive kit, but it comes with an extensive price tag as well.

Truck is a 6sp JTR with a Badlands 12k on the front.

In my opinion these are the basics if you have a winch, what else you will need will depend on what recovery points you already have on the vehicle (e.g. I have shackles already on shackle mounts on my bumpers) and what type of wheeling you are going to get into. If you are going to do mud, a kinetic strap is a good idea, for getting yanked out, or yanking out of a hole.

Factor 55 kits are good, but you can put together a great kit for a whole lot less money. Look into gear America or rhino USA, etc etc

My Opinion:
1. Traction boards - will get you out of most things
2. Cheap sacrificial tow strap - use it to attach and save wear on your winch line
3. snatch block - for doubling your winch torque
4. Tree saver - for wrapping around a tree or rock
5. Gloves
6. A good flashlight
7. a couple of D-rings

You can get almost all this stuff at Harbor Freight

Winch
4- D rings
2- 20k blocks
30'x10k snatch rope
Tree protector
80'x18k strap
12x12 plywood for jack base
Towel with carabineer to control flying tackle
Shovel

Missing:
Sand anchor
⅜"x50-80' dyneema rope
Whatever they call that part you put under the tires to give traction. (We used to use strips of carpet- roll up real tidy and work exceptionally well.)

My intention, should I need to winch myself or someone else is to configure it with one or two blocks to distribute the load across the frame and not just the 4 bolts holding the winch to the plate.

Also, most of my wheeling is solo and some in areas w no trees.

I definitely agree most kits aren't the best value.
I would add:
Friends
A shovel and wood cutting device of some kind;
A shorter strap for potential flat towing- the cheap kind (these get messed up)
Some transport chain with griper and slider hooks (for rigging the snatch block)
Water and snacks (for when a 3 hour tour isn't)

I'd say at a very minimum, you should have a snatch rope and two shackles (D-rings or Soft). That way all you need is someone to show up and you have the gear.

I have:
Winch
15ft chain (Was given to me so I keep it in the truck, only use it for dragging limbs and stuff)
25ft strap
2 Soft shackles
Tree Saver strap
Snatch Block
2 Fire Extinguishers (My Ram Eco diesel burned to the ground on me so I have them everywhere now)

Yep I have similar. Bought a 5 Gallon Home Depot Bucket and all of the above are in there along with a small foldable shovel although I do have a much better shovel I would take if I know I was going out on the sand, etc. Eventually I want to get some recovery boards to take as well since I think those would be better on sand. Got the strap and tree savor for a really good price off of Amazon black friday. D-Rings/Gloves/Snatch Block got from Harbor Freight with a coupon (Eventually want to add a couple soft shackles). Want to replace the snatch block eventually with a recovery ring but the current one will work for emergency
