Also worth noting for those that think the egts are what’s pulling the power in the jeep, the same power plant ie “same engine and transmission with the same final drive gears” in the ram 1500 will pull 12k if you look at the ram forums those guys are not seeing the same oil temperatures we are. Some say they are seeing 145 with 10k load. I see 155 with 6k load on a hot day. It’s in the cooling… it almost seems to be that jeep engineering made it this way on purpose so that we don’t hook this mid size jeep to a 10k load and say it’ll pull it !! Problem is they fucked up and made it so it’s struggling to hit the 6500# mark comfortably.
we all know they said they could not do it given the front end of the jeep yadayada. … seems to me that they could have put a larger remote cooling system somewhere like I’m going to do for under a grand…

egts may be a culprit but high oil temps are definitely happening. I’ve not had a derate myself but have seen oil as high as 250+ I’ve decided that regardless of derate or Lack of derate I will be adding the bypass filter and I will also be adding a cooler. Likely one with a thermocouple and fan. I’m eyeballing this one

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-13740
With the insane diesel bypass
It’ll come on at 200 and off at 180
Will likely put on a switch as well so I can leave it off while not towing
Might do a regear as well down the line if I need to
has anyone run the lorenzos oil in the 3.0 ?? Is it even compatible??
I spoke with the rep from insane diesel at length regarding Lorenzo’s oil, he swears by it and has been running it in his land rover for like 200,000 miles doing 20 to 30,000 mile oil changes…. Says his temperatures are far lower and his fuel economy has risen 20% or more…. Almost too good to be true…. He says it lowers friction so much that the engine runs completely different…

Oh and due to a spur of the moment travel booking for a week in South Carolina In April I’ll have to order up my parts soon so I can get them installed and tested for leaks prior to us leaving ny. When I make that trip I will log as much data as I can to give a good amount of information when i get back. Hope to see warm temps there In late April similar to what I see in ny in may or June. If I can tow in 80ish temps and stay under 230 I’ll be happy

Oredered the bypass system from insane. Ordered a derail dual fan cooler and thermostat from summit. So… when it all comes in I’m going to have a look see and see about mounting locations for the filter and cooler. I’m thinking of hitting the filter first then the cooler to keep the oil hot through the filter to help with increasing flow through the system, then the cooler fallowed by the return to the cap. I ordered the T tap system rather then the oil cap method due to wanting to be able to use the gen 3 oem filter. It’s also like 150 bucks cheaper. And I feel it’s a cleaner install as well.
anyone know how much of a pain it is to reach/ remove/ replace the pressure sensor??

I'm looking forward to hearing how this install goes, please take pics! I'm going with the same cooler as well, let me know what you find in the way of mounting locations & fan noise. Have you had specific derating or heat issues that you can try to replicate post install?

I have had zero derate issues. I tow a 30 foot travel trailer and this past summer I was seeing oil temps of 245 to 255 in 90deg. Temps in NY. Im simply looking to keep temps down to under 220ish. This spring I will be towing the trailer down to myrtle beach for a week of relaxation. When I get all my parts in I’ll start looking at locations to mount things up. Even tho I have no derate issues I’m hoping that the products I install and the the methods I implement once posted here will help others. I’ll take pics and make a guide to my end results for everyone to see. So far I’m at just over 1k in cost. That’s the cooler a thermostat some fittings 20 feet of braided line hose clamps and the insane diesel filter kit for the wrangler..
it’s 9 degrees out here right now and I have no garage so it will be a bit before I get everything installed. Might even pay to have it done if the weather holds me up too long!!

I’m seriously hoping this drops my oil temps by 15 to 20 degrees while towing. I don’t want to have to build a closed loop system with a pump and the whole nine.

Read all 27 pages, and walked away nervous. I pick up my new '22 Diesel Rubicon this week (I think). I've previously had a 3.0 diesel in the GMC truck, which I loved and drove me to get this engine.

As a new owner, what should I be doing realistically to keep my temps low? I plan to install the S&B air scoops week one, hoping I can just keep them open all the time, including the rain.

My use case - daily driver, live in SC, in Florida a lot. Pull a 3500lb cargo trailer on occasion, as well as a 3000lb boat. So, while I won't be doing much elevation work, no shortage of high outdoor temps while pulling mid-weight trailers.

You should be fine with that use. If you were climbing 6% plus grades over 90°+ ambient while loaded all the time, then things could get warm. I pulled my 3,900lb RV all over the southwest in Oct with almost no issue.

It appears most of the modern trucks with electric fans have heat issues in extreme conditions. Price we pay for fuel economy.

Thanks! Do you think the SB Air Scoops are a worthwhile addition? I planned to pull out the foam and add the scoops this weekend.

I honestly dont think any of that is going to help the water/oil temp situation. It may raise or lower underhood temps. I have chosen to do nothing for now with mine.

As I posted previously I tow heavy and have not derate at all. You will be fine and honestly I probably would be to. I tinker I find things that are not really a problem then make them go away.
I spent many years troubleshooting machine performance issues and trying to squeeze everything I could out of extremely expensive equipment. So my journey here is not to solve a problem im having its to make a possible issue a non issue. And to help others that in fact are having issues. I might be going to sc this spring but inAugust I might want to go to co?? If I get into the mountains I could be slowed down with my 5500 lbs of crap behind me. If a 1k investment treats my truck to sub-220 degree oil im in! I’ll post what comes from my install regardless lol
But don’t let us internet experts scare you enjoy the truck tow your trailer and smile away! If it derates just know that even though jeep says “ idk what your talking about there is nothing wrong with your truck” there are people out there finding solutions to NON PROBLEMS!!!

I can't imagine dropping temps is ever a bad thing if they run as hot as everyone says, even if you never derate. While I'm under no delusion that this will be a million-mile diesel for me, I don't want it to take a crap out of warranty either!

Called insane diesel today being that my order had not shipped I decided to change my order to the filter cap system.
got looking and it looks like a pain to reach the oil pressure port. So I’ll go with the filter cap option and just use the gen 2 filter. Other parts have started trickling in. I received my braided line and clamps along with my t stat. Cooler is out for delivery today!
