Hey guys Who else owns a willys with 373 gears with the 32 inch mts and feels like it’s under geared ? So hard to maintain a speed without dropping a gear or 2 . I feel like it was easier for them to just produce them with the sports with smaller tires… or is it just me?

I've had no issues getting up to or maintaining speed here in Houston. When we have taken it on trips, it's cruised all day without issues as well. In fact it feels a lot livelier than my 2014 JKU.

I’ve got a 21 Willys MT and I thought it was sluggish when I bought it. Shortly after I added a throttle controller and it completely relieved the issue for me.

Ya I installed a throttle controller and it seemed to help some but cruising above 60 it runs from 6-8 gear . I feel like if it had 410s or up it would get better mpg like the sports with the 30 in tires . Thanks for the response

Livelier" is because of the 8 transmission vs the 5 speed transmission...

My overland has 373 but also has 35 in tires and the only difference I notice is way worse fuel mileage

Coming from a JT Rubicon with 4.10's, I think my Willys with 3.73 gears is under-geared.

In my opinion, with both the JL and JT models, the Willys trim is just an appearance trim for the most part than a functional one. At least with the JK Willys model, they made a decent effort to make and market it as a "Rubicon Lite" with the option to have 4.10 gears. On the JL and JT, you have to take the standard 3.45/3.73 gear set with no factory order option for the 4.10 gears.

I like my Willys but if I had to do it over again and get a non Rubicon JT, I would have gotten a Sport S with Max Tow option to get the 4.10's and could have sticker slapped it into a Willys model.

Yes that’s a great comparison since tire size are close but one has 373 and rubicon has 410s. On the willys they added the tires but not the gears..

If you’re able id suggest swapping on a set of the dueler a/t take offs. It should roll WAY easier without the M/T tires.

or an equivalent sized a/t tire with a more street friendly tread.

I have a Willys. No complaints with the 3.73 and stockers. My driving varies (including towing), but get anywhere from 23mpg down to 15mpg.

4.10 would be nice, but I would offset that with bigger tires.

Trade it back in, or replace gears.

Both have been in my thought process. I do not hate my Willys per se, just was spoiled by my Rubicon JT and how it drove. I will probably eventually re-gear, unless I stumble on some decent 4.10 take off axles for a good price.

I will mention also that around the 5K mile mark, the transmission and adaptive learning has settled in where it shifts fine for most driving situations for me. I just know that 35's are out the window until I re-gear.

Just to throw a little fuel on, it looks like your complaint is the the Willys is "over geared" not "undergeared".

Diesel Willys with stock gears for me is doing fine. I do think even the diesel would do better with 4/10s but it’s not a stock option for some reason. Wish it was as I would have gone that route. If I re gear it’ll be deeper then 410 to make it worth it. But it’ll stay stock for now
