This sound was happening before my new motor was installed and it's still doing it- a strange thump that sounds almost like a preamp turning on after Auto start stop and on initial startup. It comes from the rear of the truck.
I replaced almost everything... Something with the cat maybe?
I had over 102k miles on it, and don't have patience to jump through any hoops or hopes they might actually do something to help. Besides, I was done in less than a month by myself. I can imagine it would take a dealer 6 months. Lol
Damn!
I only had a burnt valve which appears to have mostly ended up in the cat, and we scoped the plenum for giggles and didn't see anything. However, I went ahead and bought a new one just in case.
That bolt holds a pulley and nothing more.
Oil cooler cracks would be from someone over tightening the filter housing. I've heard the actual seals go bad where they contact the block and that the aluminum cooler is a waste of money (from the mechanic who services the JKs at the tour company I...
Oh I forgot- there's a pipe plug in the passenger side bank where the EGR cooler attaches on the driver side. Grab it! If you forget, a 20mm 1.5 oil drain plug will work.
Thanks to all who helped me out with the questions I had as I swapped my bad motor for a new long block from Powertrain Products LLC.
I thought maybe this post could help someone else in the future, so here's a few things that I did that helped and things I wish I knew before I started.

I, Ed Mitchell,
In 2025 I Resolve To Offroad with Metalcloak!

2. JK Wrangler Jeep "Crawler" Rear Bumper, 62" BPC...
The burnt valve was on #6. I put a straight edge across the bottom and it doesn't look like it's completely flat. At bare minimum I wanted to compare it to a good one to see if it warped or anything.
Thanks ... Your thoughts are in line with my own.
Assuming this had something to do with the camshaft wearing out because this is the same cylinder, (number five). It's not why I'm replacing the motor, however. Burnt valve + low compression on other cylinders are contributing factors to that.
I've spoken to a few people about whether or not I...
I had a lot of angst wondering how I was going to get all that stuff back in there! It's bad enough every electrical connector feels like unlocking the Egyptian tomb like Indiana Jones... Then they stuff all that crap behind the motor for extra fun.. @&_#!!
I was thinking along those lines but was hoping someone like yourself would chime in and confirm.
I've not done a motor install in about 20 years and then it was an SBC in a J10. Much different than working on this thing.
Thanks!
I read in one of the JL forums that removal of the motor is much easier with the lower manifold removed because the top two bellhousing bolts are a royal beach to access with it in place. Of course, I read that after pulling my motor. I'm about to install a long block but I'm still swapping...
Thanks. I am sure it'll be easier to pull using those plates but they're a few hundred bucks so I wanted to see if there were other ways people have attached straps etc.
