With the 8spd auto, definitely weight. The trans can do an amazing job in making up for the change in effective gearing, but it just takes more power to get heavier tires moving. Look for light wheel/tires, unless you're planning to re-gear. This will help with ride, too.
Doesn't hurt that Ranger and Colorado deliveries have been on pause for some time. For anyone choosing among the midsize segment, there have really only been 2 options. Suppose it's all great timing for the Frontier, too.
The JT alone already has a sizable list of axles that need to be on hand for the different models. Are all diesels on wide axles?
3 Front Axles: Base 3.73, open 4.10, open 4.10 (iron knuckles), locked 4.10
4 Rear Axles: Base 3.73, LSD 3.73, LSD 4.10, locked 4.10
XR Rubicon option would add one...
Well, optional ratios used to cost about $50 on a pickup. The part WILL cost a little more, just because it's lower volume production, but the biggest cost is in the added parts management.
Your club is for losers, who admit they were wrong. As long as I don't admit it, I never have to be wrong on the interwebs...
All kidding aside, I would like to hear more about a 4.88 option- A Willys Sport XR is just my flavor.
The dig difference I would ecpect between the Gladiator and Tacoma is the height of the green house. A cap built to match the tacoma or colorado would come in low, compared to the Gladiator.
The D478 specifically is a new derivative in the trans family. In marketing speak, "new" primarily means "new to Jeep". The Toyota versions are a few years older. The reason it's paired ONLY to the pentastar is because the 2L turbo doesn't have enough idle torque for good off-rad properties and...
Have to disagree on a few points here:
The 6spd manual in the JL and JT is a fine unit. It shifts nice and versions of that same trans family come in the HiLux with a torquey diesel and 3-ton tow rating. The close-ratio version is in the Tacoma, and they're not reporting any durability issues...
Let me clarify- the order guide sats you can't have a diesel with the Bridgestone dueller ATs. The MT tires on the Willys and Texas trail are unaffected. Any package on a Sport S that shifts/forces to Bridgestone tires is currently not compatible with the Diesel option. The Sport (non-S) has not...
Technically no- I have not seen a manufacturer that will recommend tires wider than 285mm for 7.5" (all stock JL/JT wheels). People do it all the time, though. The tire WILL have more crown and wander more than it would on a wider wheel. Have considered the Kenda Klever 35x10.50s?
