Yes, but that voltage you are sending has to have a return path back to the source. The small black wire MAY connect to the main black and black/white. You can check it with a meter. If it does then you don't need to connect it.
Exactly right. My 2.5" Clayton actually netted ~4" at first, then settled a little after a couple of weeks at ~3.5". I'm not carrying much weight around and I'm happy with were it sits now.
