With the box and gear, the stock dampener is no match lol...
...it drops HARD. I was looking at the DeeZee heavy duty replacement. If that doesn't work, I'll need to measure the stock one, and find a generic that is rated for more weight. Shouldn't be terrible, just need to do some legwork...
Well good news, it worked out pretty great. Wrote about it here. Some quirks that I want to work out, but the box turned out solid. Worst part about the cutting was the mental aspect. The grinder didn't care lol.
Now all my recovery gear is in the bed where I wanted.
Update 3/15/2024.
Fixed the tailgate hard dropping issue. For once, it was actually easy. I decided to try my luck with a drop in replacement, a DeeZee replacement strut, on the bet that it would be stronger.
Took 5 minutes to install, and my flat working area is already being useful...
(Summary at the bottom: Overall rating: 8/10: Feel free to ask any questions!)
The day has arrived, I've lost my marbles and cut open my truck with an angle grinder!
Now I have my reasons for this, as I'll explain bellow. It was so I could do this...
If you don't mind doing some leg work, you can mount whatever flush mount lights will fit in the bumper with this reflector delete kit. Just mark and drill your holes, and paint or powder-coat the plates afterwards.
I had a set of Rigid ignites on my old Go-Rhino bumper that would work with...
I washed it. Looks perfect. ?
Ok, I also did buy a new set of ditch lights for it. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the High/Low function working for these.
Is that receiver rated similarly to the factory tow package? I had thought about going with a high clearance bumper before, but every aftermarket bumper with a high clearance receiver that I saw labeled them as an "accessory" receiver and they couldn't rate them for actual towing.
I'd hate to...
All the vinyl work I've done to the truck so far.
Hood and letters were made by Pixel Decals. Fenders and tailgate were made by Adventure Life USA. And the dash by L&B Design works.
Absolutely in love with the way it all turned out.
I wish I had seen these before I got the Rough Country's, but Barnes has a full set for around $400 all said and done. Best part is they're no drill, unlike RC.
Biggest things are they say "sold out" but you can call for production times. And I'm not sure if they're even powder coated, and...
Same here lol. I have a 2" receiver block with a d-ring attachment that's saved about a dozen or so locals who thought they could cut through the desert in their unmodified street truck. I've made money by having it with me, along with the other recovery gear. First time I used it was 1 week...
I have a soft shackle here as a "sacrificial" soft connection to either my tow strap or, more importantly, my kinetic rope. Metal bits vs soft fibers like rope, the metal bits will win a fight 95% of the time. If the finish on the D-Ring isn't perfect, it turns razor sharp when pulling another...
I mounted mine the same way. In fact I'm thinking of removing the hard mounts one last time so that I can put RivNuts so that I can remove them without taking the molle panels off, if I need the bed space for some reason.
I'm running a set of the G003's in 37x12.5r17. Replaced a set of (very) worn out Pro-Comp MT's (don't buy those). I've got about 10,000 miles on mine.
They're one of my favorite tires. I pretty much agree with everything that @hjdca said, they're one of the best tires on the market...
You have to be mindful of sharp edges when using a soft shackle. A lot of those D-Ring gussets will saw through a soft shackle as you're pulling. I'd put my money there on why the soft shackle failed. Being a worn out, no name Amazon special definitely did not help.
When I'm using soft...
At the moment I have my traction boards and Rotopax cans mounted to them. The molle bags have my ratchet straps and bungie cords in them. I plan on adding a fire extinguisher mount in the future.
I've also bought a Reaper Off road tailgate box, and will be moving my recovery gear to that...
November 2021:
This was a pretty major upgrade, a set of Mojave take off shocks! Found someone local who had removed the set from his truck, less than 500 miles on them. Also included with the sale were the other bits and pieces of the kit like the skid plate and matching springs. I threw these...
