The interest in electric cars is tanking imo. It’s not really talked about as much anymore. I write for an automotive website and we stopped our heavy push for electric vehicle articles because people aren’t as interested and aren’t reading about them as much anymore.

I don’t want to say electric vehicles are a fad because they aren’t, but I think the initial hype is severely wearing off, especially for non car people. I think 99% of people these days would take a hybrid over electric.
Anecdote. EV's increase market position every year.

We did this electric experiment in the 1890s
Oh yeah - totally the same world and tech as in the 1890s. All hype and gimmicks not spending $450/gasoline a month to ferry 3 kids to school and sports.

I should rip out my solar and spend $1100/mo on electricity - all hype and gimmicks, this new fangled electric tech.

I wouldn't get in a BYD in a million years unless China meets US safety standards.
I mean you're not wrong... i wouldn't be caught dead in one.

But it makes for a good troll for a tesla owner that's butthurt ya know? 😎 :CWL:

Is your solar paid off or still financing it? Because a solar setup that could handle charging your car ain't cheap. Would love to hear what you spent on solar so you could buy an overpriced EV car and let's run some math on what a ice fuel efficient car that gets 40+ mpg could do for the same money, like how long until it matches the same money spent. Wanna do it? Come on big boy with a EV but ... owns a Gladiator? Oh i can tell you are really into gas savers. :CWL: and not the novelty of them.

What did you spend on the solar setup
And what EV did ya buy. Let's run some numbers against a toyota gas saver car and see who comes out on top with 10 years of ownership.

14.4kw, 33 panels. Paid for itself in a year and a half. I paid cash. It offsets about $12k in electricity/year, and $6,000 in gas/year. System cost $25k.

Here is what I owe SDGE for power.... for the entire YEAR. My A/C is set and forget it to 68F, year round. :) Charge the EV about 4x a month while I sleep.

Well..... tell me how the hybrid would save money versus using my massive production and NEM 2 credits. ;) These aren't hype and gimmicks, they're MASSIVE savings.

10 years of gas in a 40mpg Hybrid for us would be 150,000 miles... SO:

150,000/40mpg = 3750 gallons - $20,000 in gas ASSUMING gas stays at $5.50/gal here in SoCal, which it won't. Charging = free. Solar is paid off. Combine that with the EV needing very little maintenance over same miles - wipers, tires, MAYBE suspension components... brakes no way. Never used. I have to remind my wife to every once in awhile turn off 1 pedal and use the brakes for a whole drive just to keep them "exercised".

In our use case, an EV is far cheaper over 10 years even if it cost $20,000 more. Battery degradation? Bummer - guess I have to charge 5x a month for free instead of 4. Hybrids are incredibly complex machines to maintain and offer 0 cost benefit.

Sixty-Seven Thousand Dollars?!?!

Nobody wants luxury high-end EVs. I guess Jeep was too far in to change course.

I see 3 to 4 Rivians every day on my 10 mile drive to work. Depends on where you live. Teslas? Probably 30.

Fair enough. "Nobody" is presumptive of me. There is a market.

Most People don't want luxury high-end EVs. I guess Jeep was too far in to change course.

There's no more $7.5k incentive, and the EV market is saturated with premium vehicles.

We want electric Suzuki Samurais, not electric G-Wagens. $67k means this flops.

Uhm, you make less power than a typical 200amp electrical service which would be 48kw.

So with an inverter and losses, you are producing what 12-13kw output to charge? Typical Tesla usable is about 75 kWh, would be about a 4 hr charge (with nothing else being used on your local grid)
Bigger packs like 90kWh would be about 7.5 hr, assuming you have good mid-day sun and getting the whole 14.4kw, which you don't get that for all of the sunlight hours. You didn't mention batteries, so assuming you don't have any, so yeah, i bet it struggles and can only charge really in the peak day time, so long as you got no clouds. lol

What in the world are you driving that is using $6,000 in gas a year.

National gas price atm is $3.09

Avg jeep gladiator might use about 710 gallons a year comes out to about 2200/year. I don't pay anything near that at $2.25, so I'm only about $1600/yr.

So what were you putting 2000 gallons of gas in that was costing you $6,000/yr?

I don't have batteries. Don't need them. Are you unfamiliar with Net Metering? I get credits for all exports throughout the day, I provided the graph of ACTUAL production. I go into import when charging, but it doesn't matter, because my massive exports credit them. $102 for the whole year is my TOTAL electric bill. The replaced vehicle was an Acura MDX. I charge at night, full import. Costs nothing due to NEM offset.

I have a 400a service too. =D All the power I need, all free due to NEM.
