Hey friends, not here to fuel the fire on the 3.6L tick, but just adding another data point to the failure log. Drove home from Moab this past weekend and just made it back to Denver with 61,300mi on my 2020 JTR with CEL and nasty tick. For those wondering if you have the "tick"... you'll know when it's real. It's a loud clacking from inside the cab when RPMs raise above 2K. Standing at the engine bay outside with the hood open is actually more quiet than sitting in the cab for me. Really sucks and I'll post back here once I hear about the solution timeline. Misery loves company :)

It's an unmistakable sound - once you have heard it, be it an OHC V6 or an I6 or V8, you'll know it.
Clack is a good description.

As far as what I see at the dealership, it's all and every cam, no real common one tbh. Both upgrade and non-upgrade 3.6. High an low cam lobs. Intake and Exhaust. My theory is it's the lash adjusters (we all just call them lifters because we are lazy lol). 90% of the time, I have to use a vise to get them to compress on a cam lob that is chewed through, the others can be squeezed by hand, to me, this makes perfect sense as well. lifter stuck up, excessive force into the rocker, in turn pressure on the lob, eventually eating through it and the roller on the rocker. Almost never do I see it being the rocker only, unless it's just pure manufacturing error. What could be done? Hell if I know lol. The issue is the lifter is stuck up physically, so only real answer there is excess play, causing a bind. What could cause that? One way or another, improper lubrication. First hand experience now, just doing 3k mile oil changes didn't save me at 72k needing all 4 cams 🙃. Either, the design of the adjuster will fail no matter what and someone will need to design a better one (sadly the Ferrari hand built Maserati 3.0TT that is identical to a 3.6 with different heads, uses the exact same part number of rockers and lifters, they see significantly less failures if any. Their oil is now 5w40, was 5w30, but changed due to oiling issues... interesting lol. From here on, I guess I'm trying 5w30, as long as there is no issues with VVT/VVL, I don't see myself going back to 0w20.

I thought the part number of the lash adjuster was changed along the way. Is that not correct?

Are the valve springs and valves identical in those other makes to the FCA 3.6?
Is the cam profile the same?

I don't see issues with 5w30 other than in our climate here - I want that winter number down there at 0.

No part numbers have updated for my 22. Intake adjusters updated on October 20th 2020, and intake rockers November 11th 2021. Nothing exhaust side. Cam, valves and springs I'd assume are all different on the F160 engine, more power, boosted, high flow heads (3 exhaust ports, no head-a-fold design like the 3.6) higher rpm etc. They also don't run VVL, so similar to a non-upgrade 3.6, intake and exhaust run the same rockers/lifters. Visually, the parts look the same, identical would be an understatement, even down to the cam lobes, different cams though to incorporate the Direct Injection pump in the back of the cam like the 2.0T in the wrangler. I'd have to ask parts at work to cross reference the Scuderia part numbers to the Mopar ones if the valves/springs are actually different though. I also noticed my tick was significantly worse the first 10~ minutes in the cold mornings this year. I honestly have no clue if thicker oil would hurt or help that.

My 2021 durango sxt had the same exact thing darkhorse described. The clack that comes sometimes under light power. Hard to hear outside sometimes, easier to hear in the cab.

Just curious for those that have had this fixed at the dealer. What Are they charging for this repair if it’s not under warranty?

I want to start saving my penny’s😂
