My hitch took numerous beat downs running Moab trails. Really though any non-trivial trail I seem to be dragging it a lot. My advice skids or other protection is take it slow. That rear sticks out a long ways and can really come down hard even taking it easy.

The hitch skid is the thing I paint last. I think it shows the Hondas behind me that it actually gets wheeled if it has rusty scratches on it.

After my 1st trip to Moab in the JT, the order for a hitch skid went in right away!

I went with the 41.22 skid. Pricey, but aluminum so I don’t have to worry about rust where the paint was ground off. Light weight and minimal, and has a nice hole for recovery in it.

Gemini Bridges off of 191 just NW of Moab is a rough, non-technical trail that pays off with awesome views. Metal Masher is a 7/10 difficulty trail nearby if you want your metal mashed, heh.

I ordered mine after my first Moab trip as well. Right after bending my chain rings down again. :) but I wanted the width to protect the chain rings and bumper a little better. I tend to slide down descents on the skid at times. Sometimes with the rear tires off the ground. I also wanted a recovery ring so got the warfab Sheridan.

Metal masher isn’t bad at all. In my opinion, the 7 rating is for the optional obstacles, many of which I did take, but they’re not required. I’d take a stock Jeep on that trail, but would avoid the worst stuff.

Edit: A stock Jeep with a winch. Safety first.

As you said, Gemini is beautiful. I taught my 5 and 6 year olds last year to drive on that trail. No pedals, just steering and 4 low. Pretty fun.

I am planning a road trip out west for the summer in my 2021 JTR. I am running stock wheels and tires with no lift. I do have a winch and an air compressor on board.
Currently I am looking at running a few badge of honor trails, Fins and Things and Hells revenge.
Are there any other trails I should be looking at running?
Thanks in Advance

I've been to Moab twice with my 2020 JTR. I have been there other times with my motorcycle or my Jeep TJ. It is a fabulous place. Since this is your first time, I'd be less concerned about the Badge of Honor trails and more concerned about having some fun, learning about Moab, and finishing in one piece.

First about Fins N' Things. This is a fun and challenging trail not far from Moab. The trail is about 9 miles long and consist of a "main route" with alternate hard sections. There are some ups and downs that are very steep - think 30°. In my JTR, I could do the main route without much dragging. I was doing the alternate hard sections until I tried one that was shaped wrong for the breakover angle of my Gladiator. I tried it 3 times and high centered each time. Nine miles doesn't seem like much, but the pace of travel is slow and there is often other traffic.

This movie is from Fins N' Things. It's the climb out from the first section to the paved road.

Here is one of the Fins N' Things downhills that get your attention.

Pucker Pass is easy and very scenic. It is a good way to get from Dead Horse Point State Park to Moab. Excuse the singing. My wife stayed home and I was Wheeling unsupervised.

There are several places around Moab where you climb or descend canyon walls on mountain type roads. The Schaffer Switchbacks is probably the most well know. Nearby to Schaffer is the Mineral bottom Switchbacks. Further out of Moab is Spring Canyon. This one is my fav.

I think you already mentioned Potash Rd. This is easy and scenic driving.

This is on the Green River side of the White Rim Trail.

Fins is a good starter run to get an idea of how she’ll do.
Hell’s will test your rear bumper, a lot. You’re going to be scraping it. Know on trail exit your skid plates and rock rails are going to get beat up. Stock height and a long wheelbase are not your friends.
Baby Lion’s Back is in between Hell’s & Fins so don’t miss it. Hill descent control for the win here.
Steel Bender is close by and is a fun Badge trail so don’t miss it. You’ll get a bumper scrape getting by the gate keeper crossing the creek but it is a worthwhile trail. You will most likely turn around at the drop off but it is doable. It’s just more doable with a lift on 37s.
Onion Creek, which is about 40 minutes from Moab, is easy and fun because you drive through multiple water crossings. It’s also a great place to go at night and check out the stars.
Top of the World I’ve seen mentioned in the thread but I wouldn’t do it in a stock JTR. I’ve done it in my stock 2DR JLR and it is doable but you’re probably going to damage your rig. Know that TOTW is about 30 mins farther from Onion Creek.
7 Mile Rim is a good trail, some technical stuff, and it puts you on top of the Big Mesa Area. You can spend hours there exploring and checking out some cool arches and take in the view from the top of the Mesa.
When you’re done with beating up your stock JTR, and looking for a great hike, check out Bowtie Arch.

Enjoy!

I returned from my 10 day trip in Moab this past Saturday. I ran 8 trails including 8 badge trails. I run 37" KO2's with 1 1/2" front, 3/4" rear spacers and full skid plates. I am still working on getting my pics and report up for all.

You will be able to handle fins and things and hell's revenge. Coming down the right side of Top of the World was challenging but no issues except my wife's anxiety. Potash and Schafer switchbacks was an easy day.

Some trails that I did that were novice friendly, my daughter drove, that were still fun with awesome scenery were Courthouse Rock, Tusher Tunnel, Mill Canyon (all 3 close to each other) and Onion Creek.

Elephant Hill is a bit of a drive south but was super fun and we met a newer stock 4dr Tacoma coming up the switchbacks at the start so it is doable stock.

I had reservations for two nights camping on the White Rim but the Green River flooded the eastern side and couldn't access Labyrinth campground or do a complete loop so I changed plans. FYI - as of today it is still impassable at Upheaval Wash:

White Rim Road impassable at Upheaval Wash due to Green River flooding
Alert 1, Severity danger, White Rim Road impassable at Upheaval Wash due to Green River flooding
White Rim Road is flooded at Upheaval Wash due to river flows above 18,000 cfs. Vehicles are at risk of getting stuck. High river flows could continue through early June. Check current conditions, bring extra fuel, and be prepared to turn around.
I'm very interested in this. Bought my gladiator 2 weeks ago and I'm looking at going 37s and starting with the spacer and even the KO2 route. If you've done all of this on spacers kind of flies in the face of what you "need". Sure, I'd like to go straight to a Clayton or EVO lift .... I've gone the expensive route on the last 4 vehicles I had (one JL) and wasn't super happy. I like the stock ride and drive characteristics (maybe I'm getting old?)...maybe I'll try something different. Interestly enough ,I'm east coast too, southeastern VA. where we hit some moderate trails and the beach a lot.. but it is my DD..... So with those spacers you've likely done more than I'll do. How is the ride quality with the C rated KO2s and the spacers?

I highly recommend Charles Wells' Moab book. Good info and his ratings for the trails are nice for someone who has never been there.
Potash-Schafer-Long Canyon is a beautiful day and worth your time.
I personally don't like Top of the World anymore since it has gotten so torn up, but the view is amazing
Dome Plateau is easy and has several arches and some great views.
Fins and Things is fun and as was mentioned is a great way to experience what the Jeep can do.
Hell's Revenge shouldn't be a problem, just have to pick your lines carefully.
Seven Mile Rim is a great trail and has a lot of variety. (How hard it is is up to you)
You could do Poison Spider but you will drag in a few spots and one of the switch backs climbing the cliff has gotten really torn up.
Another easy but beautiful drive is Hurrah Pass/Chicken Corners
NOTE: If it is raining be VERY careful. In fact avoid trails, go into town and eat and shop, or go to Arches. The mud is unbelievably slippery. I drove down Long Canyon in the rain once in my Cherokee, fortunately the tires stick out because I had to rub them against the canyon wall to stop.
Have fun!

Thank you for the note about impact of rain to the trail conditions. I do have the Moab book and it has indeed been helpful in planning.
