Happy 4th to all!

Jeep Gladiator 2020 Overland with a few issues - need some advice tenor-193970466

After a recent oil change, I noticed the engine was misfiring. Then got a check engine light. Then she started to overheat, bad.

Took to a local dealer and they said:
  • Code is a misfire on number one
  • Your oil filter was crushed (I had only driven on pavement since oil change)
  • You are out of radiator fluid
  • Your aux battery is not holding a charge (I had replaced both batts 3 months before so that seemed a bit strange)

Their results after:
  • New oil and filter (stating it would fix the misfire)
  • Firmware update
  • Added fluid to radiator
  • pressure tested, no leaks
  • new aux batt

30 min after I left the dealership:
  • The check eng light came back on
  • The radiator fan kicks on when you start the truck and keeps running most of the time

after 2 hrs of driving the truck around:
  • Started to run hot again

The cascading issues are troubling. I appreciate any thoughts from the collective!

Check the voltage at the batteries when truck is shut off.
Check the voltage at the batteries when it's running - using a meter at the battery and not the inside gauges.

Possible that when the batteries were changed in the past that the high current fuse that allows the aux battery to be charged was blown - preventing that battery from charging.
It's a common thing if the cables are not taken fully apart when working with the batteries - ground cable must not only be removed from the main battery, but the two black cables need to be separated when working with the batteries.

What's the coolant level in the reservoir on the firewall?

Is it possible the misfire is due to coolant getting into #1 ?
Is the coolant TRULY low and is it truly over-heating or is the temp sensor bad?

I don't know what driving on pavement has to do with the oil filter being crushed since it's not exposed to the underbelly on the 3.6 - it's on top.
Who did the oil change?

Thermostat housing and the engine coolant temp sensor are one integrated assembly. That is where I would be looking.

Radiator leak could be a pin hole in one of your hoses. My brother in law had a split radiator and had it replaced. He noticed fluid and that it was leaking. They pressure tested and everything was fine. After 3 attempts of them “fixing” the radiator and having him pick it up they discovered the pinhole in the hose on the 4th attempt to fix it. So your radiator issue is probably a pinhole in one of the hoses.

Pin hole will show a pressure test failure. They are there or not. So if it was truly pressure tested, it would fail to hold pressure. There would also be a trail. Coolant leaves a tell-tale trail from leaks - anyone observant or experienced would see the signs.
You can't pressure test a system with even a minor hole and have it pass. Not possible. Time for a new tech that took their time and left pressure on for more than 2 minutes.
A solid system will still be holding the test pressure 20 minutes later (unless the engine is warm and cools)
In other words, I'm calling out the "tech" that tested the system. I'd have found it.

Well. 3K down. Still overheating. New cam on cylinder 1 for the misfiring and a recommendation for a second engine tear down 'to see' if that fixed the engine eating the radiator fluid. Traded it for a RAM. Got 30K. I miss it already, but it was getting too expensive. Happy Jeeping all.
