I had 37" Yoko MTs on my fairly heavily loaded JTLE, and routinely hit 8th gear on the interstate, but still only averaged 14.5 over the long-term. I recently installed 5:13s which gave me all sorts of performance improvement and improved my mpg to 16.5...however, that requires speeds under 70 mph (around 2100 rpm). I went with 5:13s simply because I do a lot of off-road and pull a small trailer through the mountains. Knowing what I know now, 4:88s would have put me right in the sweet-spot and probably around 18 mpg.

Not sure about that. I'm getting maybe 16 hwy with 37s and 4:88s, by my overall shows 14.4. I wish I had 5:13s lol. The extra torque would be handy in day to day driving and towing. 4:88 is ok off road because I'm probably in low and have plenty of gear in low.

It's do-able, but you won't win any races. running 37" BFG MTs with the 4.10s, but have 5.13's sitting waiting to be installed. MPGs really aren't that bad, with the Jeep it's more about aerodynamics than anything else, if you run 80 it won't matter what gears you have your mileage will suck.

I pulled my boat over the weekend, probably 4K total. You definitely know it's back there and it struggles on the uphills, but it's about as fast as I'd want to go while towing anyways.

personally I'd go with the 37's, but budget money in the near future to regear.

I got the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss 35s and they don't measure a true 35, so I am planning to move up to the 37s. I rarely see 8th gear with the 35s and figure I might lose 7th gear moving up to the 37s. Towing a boat and an enclosed cargo trailer has really got to crap with just the one size up tire change too. Getting 5-6 MPG towing any distance.

I'm half way there, I got the rears installed and then boating season, softball season, and baseball season all started so the fronts are still waiting.

the change was substantial from a power standpoint. The ability to "almost" maintain speed on inclines is the largest obvious change. 70MPH on the interstate I'll manually shift and stay in 7th gear at 2700-2800 RPM. When an incline comes up, I'll normally drop down to 60-65, but that's still much better than before. I could probably maintain 70 if I wanted, but I just don't see the need to drop to 5th and revving at 5K to try and get up a hill vs just dropping my speed some. doing this I'm still averaging 12-ish MPG. Even not towing I'm not a speed guy so I rarely do more than 70-75 mph and I stay in 8th the whole time unless the incline is really steep.

At the end of the day, you're still asking a mid-size pickup to pull 2-3 tons, it's never going to pull it like a full-size truck, but that's a weight thing not a power thing. My trailer is set up for the boat and very well balanced, I can still feel the boat behind me, gears aren't going to change that. but I do feel it is perfectly safe with properly working trailer brakes, I've never felt sketchy or out of control. My lakes are an hour away from the house, if I was routinely pulling the boat to the beach multiple times/year I'd be more inclined to get a full size truck to pull it, but for these distances the Gladiator works just fine.
