Sport S, 6-speed manual, 37" x 12.5" falken mt's on stock wheels, tazer jl mini setting 36.45" to make speedo gps accurate at 80 mph.

3200 miles and 13 tanks of fuel with stock 3.73 axle ratio was 16.0 mpg all driving, mostly city dad duty.
then...
4076 miles and 17 tanks of fuel with 4.88 axle ratio is now the exact same 16.0 mpg, same driving.

previously on 35's i got 15.5 mpg over 3900 miles (3.73 axle) (gps corrected etc., 34.44 tazer setting)

as for me, i'm typically a left lane get your ass in gear kind of driver, i don't dilly dally at all

as for the 3.73 vs 4.88 well the 3.73 was a bit of a dog and only used 4 gears, the 4.88 makes it zip even better than it did off the lot on those tiny little cucumber slices, so it's a hoot now and use all 6 gears

computer error over these last 17 tanks and 4076 miles has been 2.91% average to the optimistic side ;)

for my Canadian friends, 14.7 liters per 100 kms is the conversion for 16.0 mpg and the total kilometers translates to 11,710 kms

it makes sense to me as i had a pentastar 8-spd ram before that (2014) and did nearly 150,000 kms and average was propably around 13 l/100 km, so i expected to be worse rolling on 37's despite being a little lighter, the bad aero a factor, it's doing better than expected however

my tires don't stick way out into the wind either like most with 4.5" bs, i have the narrow axles, narrow fenders, and 12mm wheel spacers giving an effective back space of about 5.6" (+30) so the sidewalls poke but the top of the tread edge is exactly inline with the top of fender overhang

i did also have to use a few washers under each steering stop to curb the control arm rub

seeing this fantastic beast is easiest on instagram @gladiatoryyc, all details and mods are there, do have magnaflow street series side exit cat back exhaust, otherwise stock

How did you go from 3.73 to 4.88 with same driving and not see any change in fuel consumption?

sounds about right, my sport s came programmed with 32.28" tire height fyi, yet the stock pizza cutters only measured 31" so looks to me like they program all of them for rubicon spec tires as it probably is the most commonly sold model? keep that in mind if you're hand calculating...could be a little off, an 80 mph check against a gps would probably let you know if that is the case

delhux, for quite awhile i actually got better mileage with the 4.88's, i was running about 16.5 to 16.6 but the last 8 or so tanks i'm finally back to driving how i always drive, very spirited and it's come down to match

you are more efficient when the gearing is matched properly, it's easier to find proper revs/powerband, so mileage usually better

the 3.73 had me outside of where i wanted to be rpm wise a lot more, hope that helps

also, getting the gearing proper you get to have your cake and eat it too, on 4.88's acceleration is back, not stalling on simple dumb things that the 3.73 needed silly revs to accomplish, can no gas pedal crawl start on most level-ish surfaces or bumping along in a drive through, good power when you need to pass, holds most hills on the highway in cruise etc. it's just win win getting the gearing right, 6-th gear at 75 mph is 2500 rpm now, i think 80 mph is 2700...almost a touch on the high end for 80 mph work but i'll take it, it tows great now and empty on highway is fantastic, night and day difference than 3.73 for those tires

to have all the above with no penalty in fuel economy and if i could behave it would likely be a bit better...is the second win in the win win statement ;)

the downside is it's so much more fun to drive now that i'm always into the go pedal more than i should be, i drove the 3.73 a little more relaxed but that wasn't really by choice, it forces you to, gears are just too long and lazy, it's a peppy willing dance partner now

I hate to ask this rookie question, but this is my first jeep. How do you know what gear the transmission is in? I have an automatic. Thanks.

Can someone tell me why this topic is important? It's like a Porsche 911 GT3 owner commenting about the miles he/she is getting on their tires. You bought a Jeep. Appreciate it for what it is....

Go into the menu on the dashboard and choose to show the gear. It will show up next to the D on the screen.

debbie downer looking to stir up poop, little slow at the office today? someone pee in your cornflakes?

this topic, like 99.9% of them on here, are important as people are curious and want to know things, what to expect from doing this that or the other, people can make better decisions with more knowledge, that's how forums work,

so that leads to this question then.....why are you here?

Disagree. There are already several boring threads about gas mileage in which you could have posted. If you purchased a Jeep and are concerned about gas mileage, you bought the wrong vehicle for your situation.

I doubt a single, non-Jeep owner, is making a decision about a future purchase thanks to your contribution. I can't wait for your 18, 265 mile update regarding the cabin air filter.

I suppose I am tired of the 'contributions' that are more like non-contributions. Use search, post lame updates, sell your JT if the mileage isn't to your spec....

Also, you're probably the guy I end up behind in the left lane who claims to not 'dilly dally' but is only driving 5 over. Move it to the right pal....

Can’t we all just get along? I have owned a wrangler my entire adult life and do care about gas mileage. If for no other reason to get more miles before my next fill up. Stop reading the threads that bore you so much.

lmao, i accelerate until i catch up to traffic and pressure them, my high beams flash at mere thought, within a reasonable overage of course, 20-30 km/h so don't worry about me holding you up boss, i keep a pretty good eye for even speedier than me or the bacon trying to back door me, so i'd move over if i saw ya comin ;)

and i didn't post that mileage report to show how bad it was...just data, very real data, and lots of it, take it for whatever you like...good or bad, personally i think its fantastic mileage for a brick truck on 37's and 4.88's so with the utmost respect...pound sand you grumpy mofo ;)

ps a lot of us are truck guys period so to have reference to mileage we have always tracked in our full size trucks etc. is and interest to many, including me, i dropped from a half ton to this segment, and like the other guy said, if you find that boring go click on something else

All the information is great, as there are a lot of folk on here new to Jeeps. (I've had numerous... 8 as of now) I even find the experience that others are having with the truck beneficial, as I know what to expect given a particular mod.

@Hawkeyes3312, remember it's a public park, not your lawn... we don't have to get off it, but you have the option to either deal with it or leave.
