New wheels are in the mix. Going with a 37 x 12.5 tire, should I be looking at an 8.5" or 9" wheel?...any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

What wheel width does the tire manufacturer recommend? I would go a bit wider than the minimum suggested size.

With a 12.5” width, 8-11 is most likely the recommended. 10 is ideal most of us put them on 9’s cause they’re what’s out there. If your running bead locks you might find some 10”

Thanks...I'll do my homework and figure it out. I don't get my JT until mid April so I have some time to look.

Hey OP,
You can search for any tire on this website, and it will give you the specs on what wheel size-range is recommended. When you open this link you are on the BF Goodrich page, but on the left you will see a list of tire manufacturers and you can click on whatever manufacturer you like, and then on whatever tire you want. Then scroll down and they have that tire in every size. This is an enormous database - its awesome:

I’ll dissent and say 10 is not preferable; unless you want to lose a bead when aired down.

Go with 8.5; at most 9”

most 12.5 I looked at recommended min 8.5", I can't forget it because mine are 8" and everyone said no, but I dont listen or crawl rocks, so I now have 12.5" 35's on 8" wheels.. does bubble a little more then I'd like so maybe new wheels tires next year.. got payments to make and kids to feed... ok no kids!

Here is a guide for Discount tire, I want say how I got it.
With that said I'm running stock 17x7.5 on mine with 37 12.5 17 and did it in my JKU as well. Never had a issue with losing a bead or premature tire wear.
