I spoke with the BLM and gave them the pictures and coordinates. They were very receptive and sounded like they would actually do something about it.

My thought with following his page is that people pull this kind of stunt to try and get followers on instagram. If his page becomes filled with angry comments with anything he post, he will have no choice but to shut down his Instagram account. It may not be the best method, but I'm not sure of any other way to discourage that type of behavior with idiots like this.

I don't know what the material was that he wrote with, I didn't try and clean it off or do anything other than take a picture.

I agree with you guys, but can't some of this stem from sheer ignorance? They see other people "signed the rock" and wanted to do the same thing?

I don't do social media, but you can probably tell by looking at their pages if they are prolific graffiti artists or made a careless mistake without thinking about the gravity of it.
I don't have Instagram but can you contact them directly from their page like with other social media? Perhaps leave a message saying you are very upset, tell them you're reporting it and see how they react. Humble and admitting a mistake or doubling down on defacing public land. Maybe they could donate to a charity that removes graffiti in the area. Probably even make a tick tock about in yet another attempt to get internet famous.

Just my 2 cents. I know people are stupid but mostly that is our default state and not an intentional way of life.

I hope that you're right and it was just a stupid mistake. This thing really gets me going though, mostly because I also took my two young kids on basically the exact same trip, I did this dome plateau Trail, and in the following day hell's Revenge. Without even knowing it, we were following the same trails just one day apart. So it makes me furious to see somebody out there doing the same thing with their kids, but instead of showing them how cool nature is and how fun it is to get out and explore, they start writing their names on walls.

I think I'm probably a more cynical person than you, but sometimes I think the only way to learn is for it to hurt.

What's dumb is this site is in the middle of nowhere, and you have to walk passed this partitioned off fence to get to it. This is the sign you have to walk by before you get to the cave where they decided to write their IG handle.

So what you are saying is that if I see someone break a law, it's ok for me to do it as well? No, it is not and I hope he gets the SH$T fined out of him. Maybe a good financial hit will help this dumba$$ remember not to do stupid stuff again.

What's sad to me is that he's doing really cool things with his family. He took this trip from South Dakota with his wife and two young kids. Quality time like that is priceless, and I wish more people would do it.

It's just frustrating that he made such a stupid mistake trying to get followers on instagram, which is completely meaningless anyway. Just enjoy the fleeting time you have with your two kids right in front of you, rather than trying to get some random strangers to follow you and give you some likes.

We've all done stupid things, and I'm sure there are people that disapprove the decisions I make as well. I mean, I just drove almost a thousand miles in my diesel Jeep Gladiator just to spend some time with my wife and two youngest kids for a weekend. There are definitely environmental impacts from that type of behavior as well.

I just hope that when I'm out with my kids creating these memories I'm not making decisions that deface federally protected historical archaeologic sites.

I already roll my eyes when people put their IG handle on their vehicles. Like, dude, you're another driver in traffic. Your very existence already means you're annoying me. What the hell makes you think I want to follow the adventures you have in your mom's used Accord?

This is just an entirely new level of vanity and stupidity. God I hope humans never make it past Earth. We would shit up the entire solar system.

So what you're saying is if you see someone going 66 in a 65 mph, you should internet stalk them and report it to the authorities?

Two can play this "pretend to paraphrase each other" game and I'll take it to whatever absurd extreme you'd like.

As a CWP holder, I am required by SC law to intervene. Think unpaid constabulary. Some serious evaluation must occur at lightspeed prior to presenting. Saying something first just might escalate the situation. Presenting first gets past that and goes directly to hostility. Say nothing and let nature take it's course with the Sun in a few billion years. So many choices.

Well we know why they did it. Their IG is shit! I came across some people years ago in a Sequoia Grove carving Thier named into an already downed log. Which had tons of names carved in it. Gave them an earful. Didn't stop them. Momma said "You can't fix stupid"
They should have their Jeep (sacrilege) defaced too!

Somebody needs to simmer down. Sure it is preferred that ppl don’t do this sorta thing but geez man, don’t you have anything positive that you can focus all this energy on? Maybe take all the wasted time to plan another outing with your kids
