Uconnect 5 TomTom map updates for 2024+ are a free download and install (until Stellantis takes them away or makes you pay). Stellantis | Home I found out about these on a Dodge Ram TRX forum and have successfully installed 3 of the most recent North America map updates on my 2024 JTR-X. They do one update per calendar quarter for North America.

Your Uconnect 5 system updates are free OTA updates. Because system OTA updates wonk your screen, learn how to do a radio reboot (push and hold the volume knob until the screen goes dark, then let it do its thing). Some apps will take overnight to restore themselves, and some like Trail Logs and Adventure Guides take a few days to restore.

I believe in the System Settings there is a System menu that offers the option to do a radio reboot or a total system reset (you lose all you configuration settings, phone contacts, NAV destinations, etc. with a system reset) So I would advise against doing the system reset.
The prior map updates were expensive and a pain in the butt to do.
I'd hope they would have made these easier - I noted these are TomTom after a recent startup while watching the screen.

With MY '23 and older, the large screen Uconnect always included built-in NAV. It's not the best, but it works fairly well. I used it a lot in the beginning (2019), but eventually migrated to Google Maps and Android Auto. It's nice to have the built-in NAV as a backup, but I'm rarely in an area with no cellular service for very long.
Well I do have a Garmin in my liberty so that could be my backup if I don't end up with one in a gladiator.
Now my next question would be, how do I know if it has regular tow package or max tow package? Is there something that I would see on the dash or whatever for max tow that wouldn't be on a regular tow?

90% of the learning curve is just getting Android Auto to sync with your phone. If you are buying new off the lot, sales is suppose to offer syncing your phone up the first time and if they do not, you can ask them to do it for you and show you how to get started. Just tell them that their survey results depend on it and they will be jumping over themselves to get you set up.
Thank you, very good advice there.

IMHO, built in navigation is pretty much dead tech and do not see it as a premium service. I just keep a older Garmin that has lifetime map updates in the center console just in case I happen to be in a rare place that cell reception and my Android Auto and Waze will not work.
I haven't heard of Waze. Is that something on Android Auto?

Max Tow will show as a specific option on the window sticker and on the build sheet. The only clue on the truck is the Payload capacity on the door label. It will show somewhere around 1500 pounds instead of the typical 1050 area.

Waze is a NAV program, like Google Maps. Android Auto is the interface that allows your phone display to show on the head unit screen. It's like Windows Remote Desktop. In the Uconnect 4 settings, it is referred to as screen mirroring.

Waze is a real time navigation and traffic app that works with Android Auto. Goggle owns it

I get the feel you are probably a older person that is not so tech savvy. You might want to find a family member or friend that can walk you through some of these things in person.

I ended up just downloading the entire State of California as an offline map in OnX Offroad. It was quite a few rectangles to download.

Ah, perfect. A lot of the sites show the payload.

Haha. Actually I'm quite tech savvy. Ran the whole mesh routing system for our home. We've just always had the Garmins so no need for the other stuff. But our new Ford has the navigator, now I'm getting a Gladiator and just figured it would work the same, it doesn't. So now I'm learning new stuff. Can't learn if you don't ask questions. And everybody here has been so helpful. Tried out the Android Auto on the ford yesterday evening and loved it. Especially the fact that I can put it on satellite mode, that was really cool.

I looked it up and put it on my phone last night. Think I'm going to like it. Especially the fact that it shows the speed limit without having to set a destination like you do on Google maps. And it turns red when over the speed limit, something we got used to from our Garmins.

And their real-time alerts for police, stalled vehicles, accidents and so on are great. Real people report things like stalled vehicle at mile marker xxx and you can respond with still there or not there when you get to that point. Many things are user contributed.

It's a great app, started out being created in Israel, Google later bought it. (and I hope Google doesn't ruin it like Mickysoft does to most things they buy)

I prefer Waze over Google maps for many things

When I had my '23 Dodge Hornet I really preferred the built-in TomTom navigation because of the free quarterly map updates, very accurate traffic/rerouting, and it displays the full navigation map in the instrument cluster, so for that vehicle there was some actual benefits to paying for the NAV subscription. I didn't want to use the free apps because I would miss out on seeing my navigation in the big fancy instrument panel area. Only TomTom would show up in that display area. That's how they got me!

However, I've had my 2024 Gladiator for just a few weeks and these same benefits don't exist with TomTom navigation. Since the latest Uconnect update, the traffic rarely shows up on the map. The turn-by-turn is fairly basic in the instrument panel, but it works. It was also nice to see with the Gladiator they added the nice feature of turn-by-turn in the dash cluster only when you use Apple Maps in CarPlay. This lets me view other screens on the radio display and still see my directions in front of me. I prefer Apple Maps because of the simple accurate directions and references to stop lights and stop signs, but that's just me. The TomTom navigation is very good when the traffic data works, but it's hard to justify paying for it when there are several good free options.

That's what Google maps does - references turns at a stop light or stop sign, and if you look, you can see there's x more lights before your turn as they show up on the map.
I've had the Jeep nav in my 25 alert me to things I have yet to figure out - likely photo enforcement and so on as that's where it seems to tell me of something.
