Installed an AFE filter/intake a while ago. It has a very small restrictive looking filter box opening. The other day i decided to remove the box and run w just the filter in open air. You can see i used some tie-wraps to hold the pre-filter on because the elastic didnt seem all that good. Wow, talk about turbo noise! Very pronounced spool up and when you get out of it you can hear the turbo wind down. Its pep has increased, and the sucking noise sounds like it is still somewhat restricted. Sounds like i have a jet under the hood. I may cut the box opening out larger and reinstall. I dont plan on any water crossings higher than axle centerline so all is good for 4x4 work w/o worry of any kind of ingestion. I may put on a larger surface area filter on and see how that works. Prob the restriction is the filter to turbo inlet tube

Without the Heat shielding from the Box the engine will consume the under hood temperatures and ultimately degrade power, may be a negligible loss or it may be seat of the pants feeling. But that Turbo wine may be worth the loss.

Yeah, i know that may be a factor, but the AFE box has a small opening that i guess they expect the suction to come from a small narrow area of where the hood meets the fender when closed. Super restrictive. I will "massage" the box opening nut reinstall to protect from any potential water intrusion.

I cut a slot in the bottom of the airbox to mate up to the air inlet that comes from the grill.

After test fitting it a couple of times I ended up opening it up a little more.

I was going to retrofit that little inlet to the box myself, but had some concerns of it acting like a "water funnel" if i somehow got into a large water splash

I worried about that too but after this past winter with more rain in California than in my lifetime I had no issues.

I'm surprised you hear any turbo whistle at all. Turbo spooling noises are non-existant with mine but you do hear the turbo sucking air and diverting when you let off. Just no whistle. But I also run the AFE with the filter box and a snorkel.

Are you running the AFE with the AFE Snorkel? I've been wondering if the two are compatible?

No i dont have the snorkel, not planning on ever getting into something deep enough to need it. Although it would bring in fresh, maybe cooler air

I run the AFE Rapid Induction intake in conjunction with the AEV Snorkel and a Sy-Klone prefilter.

The OP has, I assume, the AFE Momentum HD intake.

The Rapid Induction intake I run is the cheaper of the two because it reuses the factory lower box, by adding a large cone filter inside and a smooth intake tube. The AEV snorkel also reuses the factory lower box, hence why the two are compatible. I would imagine the upper intake tube is the same between the two but I don't know that for a fact.

The AFE Momentum HD intake would not be compatible with the AEV Snorkel without fab work.

And I'm not aware of an AFE Snorkel, unless it's a new product.
