There is an inlet to the air box just behind the grill. Hit the puddle just right. It will soak the air filter.

There was one guy last winter who had snow in his air box. I'm at work, so I don't have time to find the thread.
It's like the 3.6 I'd bet - a small opening between two of the grill slots and it goes up into the bottom of the air box - you'd really have to hit that just wrong to drive water into it. And it's another reason to keep up speed when going through water to push the water away from the front of the Jeep and not up against that part of the grill.

I hear what you're saying - but was it REALLY the filter, or installation, or a reason it did that when it otherwise would never do that?
Blame the filter for being soaked, or for a mouse/chipmunk nest or install issue?
Could be, but the whole story isn't visible.
One other cause or at least contributing factor could be the thickness of the seal on the aftermarket filter. If the tolerances are poorly kept and the filter sealing surface is too thin, you could tighten the housing to the point it bottoms out and the screws are tight, yet the filter is not tightened as it should be inside. Aftermarket tolerances/control of dimensions is often far looser than factory.

The OP mentioned he first had issues after a rain storm, so add some rain and a poorly fit air filter (due to a variety of reasons mentioned above), and perhaps it caused this... ?

Yes, very possibly a contributing factor.

Definitely .

So I was doing some cleaning this weekend and decided to investigate the "air intake" that is in the bottom driver's side of the grill. It runs back and underneath the air box but not into the air box. I can't really tell what it's purpose is.

This picture is the bottom of the air box. It's turned on it's side. The rectangular/oval opening is where the air intake tube goes.

It's to provide indirect fresh cold air to the filter box without the filter sucking in water or debris.
