I'm torn now. Trying to find the right setup for a 270 awning and my RoofNest tent on the top of the cap, RSI is cool, ARE is clean, also looking at the NightOwl Trailblazer.

No way, is it literally the AliBaba one?
There are a lot of dropship-type sites that provide overland/offroad stuff these days. I am not necessarily saying they are all rip-offs, or that the products themselves are garbage, just that you have options.

For you, maybe it's worth the extra cost to use one of those middle-man sites. Assuming the product is the same, and you are happy with it.

I feel you here. I have just decided that until I can find a used SmartCap locally, I will just take the off-road trailer everywhere I need a basecamp. That said, every time I see a SoftTopper on a truck around here, I want it more. It looks better in person than any of the images on the site. That doesn't really solve your problem though.

I'd wager that most of the overlanding stuff you see (roof top tents, bed toppers, awnings, etc) are all rolling out of the same Chinese factory where they customized it ever so slightly to suit the various brands. Their is only a handful of top tier companies that aren't doing this. This means, that most of this stuff you see can be gotten direct from the source (via Alibaba for example) for less because you are cutting out the American middleman peddling the Chinese parts.

Yeah I get it, ideally for my topper wants, I am leaning toward the simple SimartCap from RSI the Defender model. Simply because I want a little added security. Wife and I are just doing short trips playing local tourist around Idaho, so hot springs, Stanley/Redfish Lake, fire towers, etc. The RSI seems the best deal at $3200, the more I think about it. I have a mid height Fishbone Tackle rack on there now with my RTT.

Lighter weight then any of the name brand caps ,boasts way more static and dynamic weight capacity , actually way more then a knock off aluminum top should hold, but perhaps other brands are just more conservative. It has the lines of the RSI cap, same modular construction, weighs fifty pounds less, but looks a little lacking with outside mounted hinges and the strut looking roof rails. A lot of people buy based manly on price, they always lead with look what I paid. I bought my cap in 2020 when there were only three real players in the metal caps ,Alumacab, RLD (I think), and the new comer RSI , two Australian compaies and one South African. I thnk Covid took out RLD, I picked the RSI cap which looked similar to the RLD with the tapered rear end and folds in metal.. Has held up great , they changed from aluminum hinges to a composite hinge and when I asked about getting a set for my rear hatch that was failing, a full whole cap set showed up four days later, They are in US now so that helped , I also like to be able to talk to a person when I have a problem or question.
Seems like there are pretty many knock offs, or new players very siminlar to RSI . I would check the rate ratings between the obvious same caps being sold.....Jack
