I think it's funny how people still associate Autolite with Ford - and that's not been the case since before I graduated from high school.
Ford bought the name and some manufacturing facilities and slapped the Autolite brand on spark plugs and used them as OEM in their vehicles. But that all ended in the early 1970s.
I have a windshield wiper motor - it has Prestolite, Autolite and FoMoCo all stamped on it. And yet, Prestolite was it's own company making wiper motors for Chrysler, IH, AMC and many many other companies.
This country can't produce the products we want for the prices we demand in the VOLUME we need. And your old favorite brands haven't been what you thought they were for a very long time.
You are so correct in your assessment of how few actual manufacturers actually exist but how many brand names are out there. Case in point: In our little "second" house here in the Keys (soon to be our main house when my wife retires), I have had new windows installed in what many may call it, the sun porch. Then, we can add air conditioning (Mini Split) to make it a real part of the house.

Well, there are at least 20 brands of mini splits I have found so far. I have done my homework and narrowed it down to two or three. But in the end, I found that these things are basically made by three, yes, three manufacturers. I read further and find out that most come out of the same factories and often on the same assembly line but have different external styling and packaging. i guess I shouldn't be surprised but many of these brands you find at Home Depot, Lowes and Amazon are basically the same thing underneath.

So no, I am not at all surprised that this is common in the automotive world.

Speed shops, and all the prices that go with them, exist for boomers and people who want to brag about how much they spent and spew platitudes about pay to play and get what ya pay for.
A guy was bragging to me about how he spent $25K and waited 2 years on the 500HP engine in his "race" truck.
He frowned at me when I told him my wife's car has 525 and a factory warranty, and I spent less than $5K on my "race" car.
