ARB Locker Surface Rust Concern

Hi,

I came across an ARB Locker for sale but I have some reservations due to the condition of the locker.
The seller is asking $700 OBO, however, the locker has some surface rust.
Is the surface rust an issue if the rust can be cleaned up and removed?

What are your thoughts?

I personally wouldn't bother. If the guy let it get to that point, who knows if the dang thing even works.

It's probably junk he's trying to offload, Marketplace/Craigslist is full of people trying to sell garbage saying that it's actually gold.

The way I see it, a new ARB locker with an install kit is $1100, vs this thing listed at $700 and already in visibly bad shape.

If it's junk, you're out at least $700 and still have no locker. If you buy new, you spend $400 more, but you know that it WILL work, and will have warranty if it does break.

I could make that look like new in no time. Electrolysis, overnight, rinse and brush it off and it would be clean.

Rust isn't an issue - unless it changes the surface dimensions of anything.

I'd sure try for cheaper - for reasons already mentioned. But I'm generally not concerned about surface rust. I restore stuff all the time that's got rust on it. No chemicals or tools needed, just a setup large enough to handle the part and use electrolysis overnight.

There is rust on the visible bearing mounting surface as well as the gear mounting surface. And, it appears to be more than just light 'flash' surface rust. I deal with mounting surfaces like this on critical power plant equipment and I would not touch that thing with a 10 foot pole.

Looking at the pic close on a computer - that's a concern. Bearing area would be compromised and the trueness of the ring gear area questionable.
Agreed, it's beyond light surface rust.
