High resistance means nothing without flow. Pump not running- no flow.



A short would be there any time - and a connector would have to "short to ground" - that's a short. And that means it's present even when driving.

I know all about electricity, connectors, wiring and more - from 220 AC to 5vdc and a short is always there, not only when there's a load.

No flow, no heat. No heat if it's not running.
Short would be there running or not meaning fire as you drive.

The point I was trying to make is extreme heat, extreme cold, extreme temperature change causes things too expand and contract. Plus many other variables. Plastics, metals, rubbers and so on all have this trait. Some more than others.
So I was thinking that the electric power steering pump is made out of all the items listed above. Aluminum is kinda famous for this. The Aluminum steering gears had a recall too, although not for fires. The pump is primarily aluminum.
The steering pump has oil, 12vdc and maintains between 1400 psi and 1800psi. In extreme conditions. What could go wrong.
And then we have different kinds of shorts. Direct shorts, the type that blow a fuse/breaker immediately. These types are usually caused by nut/bolt connections that are wrong.
Intermittent shorts, the type that don’t blow a fuse right away. Loose connections, heat, cold, humidity, expanding, contracting, conductive fluids (Oil) and so on, can cause this type. Intermittent shorts have a tendency over time to get really hot, possibly causing a fire.

It is possible that heat is creating a change that allows the intermittent type short to occur once cooled off.
