Making a company trip to Lake Tahoe from Texas. If I'm this close, on my free day, I want to go check out the Rubicon Trail. Is there a place I can drive to and hike in to check it out, or do I need to rent a Jeep and drive in a little? Not going to run it in a rental. For those that are familiar, any suggestions?

The trailhead at the end of Ice House Road. Ice House itself is a long drive, about an hour to get to the trailhead.

Make sure it's open when you go. If you're in a sedan you can park at the bottom. There's a spot people leave their tow rigs. If you have your Jeep you can pretty easily crawl up the first bit of granite and it flattens out up there, and find a place to park it.

so running it backwards here is some info in here

Or just google running it backwards

Yeah but that end is boring as hell, there's nothing there to see really. Just a trail at the back of a neighborhood that's had some fill-in rocks added up and down.

Spend the time, especially if you are in south lake, to make the beautiful drive out Highway 50 and through Ice House and go to the proper entrance. From the North it will be a hell of a long drive but still doable.

It'll be a long drive to the regular trail head, beautiful but long. You can do the lake side but don't expect anything more than an average trail that a Subaru could do. You don't really get the classic views either.

you can check out the end of the trail from the lake Tahoe side and take a few pics of the sign at the end. You'll see signs pointing to the trail as you start the drive around the lake, starting from Stateline.

Things have changed and I have decided not to fly but instead take my Gladiator. Its an Overland, (So no lockers) but it has a 2" lift, 35s, manual sway bar disconnects and a winch. Haven't crawled with it yet. Plan to drive from DFW and stop at BOH trails in Bridgeport, Sedona and Nevada. Since I'm a rookie, I don't plan trashing my truck by running the Rubicon without the needed skill level and gear, but would like to do the first part, then watch and learn.

I'm no rock crawler. Not really interested in doing the Rubicon. Plus pretty stock except Rubicon take off tires. But look me up if I'm in town when you are here. I'm close by in Reno.

I've done the Rubicon, but now way with my JT. I would want 38's, 3 1/2 lift and skids and would still disk trail rash from rocks.

A couple guys took diesel gladiators through the rubicon with big tires.....

Neither made it IIRC and had to get recovered. Theres too much underneath these things (gladiators) that can impair driving. I take my willys and take the bypasses which can get pretty gnarly.

Minimum 38" tire and 3.5" lift with a full skid before i would take the gladiator down it. Way too long to avoid smashing the underside.

You can probably go out to the slab without too much issue I reccomend getting a local to help spot you. You guys can stack rocks if needed.
