Well my info is dated, but once upon a time it was $10 for a 10 year Ham license, and $75 for a 5 year GMRS license.

Hmm. Let me look.

ok, also found this:

and this:

See what happens in just a few years! All my info is wrong!!
:- D

So now my opinion is also wrong (yes opinions can be wrong, entitled or not). So if the duration and cost is the same, yeah now i see why people are going that way. The stated delta of test vs no test is real, and the only other major difference is the ability to use repeaters. But having said that, i still like the MURS bands.

$3.5 per year is a negligible amount of money so that's not really a thing to get annoyed about.

Cheers,
GMRS radios, also use repeaters.

Bah! I'm so wrong!
https://www.repeaterbook.com/gmrs/Display_SS.php?state_id=08

Well at least around here not many that would help me, but I do appreciate being corrected!
Stuff happens.. :like:
Some of us don't want to deal with the added B.S. on the HAM side. I worked as a commo NCO in Inf Company for awhile, don't want to have to deal with that much stuff, now years back. It can be interesting to talk with someone who is over 2000 miles away on a radio but don't do much out on trail a mile or 5 away.

GMRS radios are the direction everyone seems to be going. There are plenty of handheld models that will work for what you are planning to do.
You're right, but my club still uses CB, so that those without GMRS can communicate. It works fine on a trip.

I would not reply on any radio in an emergency. For trail comms GMRS is great. If you frequent ares like you mention grab a Garmin Inreach/Spot. Its like $15.00 a month for the safety plan and you can get help from anywhere.
But $400 initially.

I feel like the community is completely missing the MURS unlicensed bands (one guy on this thread did mention it) . I repeat, no license needed for MURS.
biggest issue is its just for a portable. GMRS can be used with a mobile. I used MURS alot in SAR for training and stuff. The handheld options in certified radios are slim though. But as you said has value.

Yup...but guys on here spend that much on a GMRS radio or a light bar for the roof of the jeep. to me the cost of life cannot have a dollar figure. $400 is nothing when you really need help. Just need to put it in perspective I guess.

FRS doesn’t need license either, and it’s freqs are mostly the same as GRMS, just limited on power…

I agree. I'm a retired geologist, and luckily we always had one paid for by the project. My wife would like to get one, so...

Yes, emergency communications, but they are a little vague on how close a communicator it'll be to the Inreach. But, you should be able to at lease contact EMS, and have people track your location via satellite.

I have even used mine when I was solo on Imogene.. Came across a group of vintage Toyotas.
25+ spread out all over Imogene. Jumped on their channel just so I knew when they were coming up. Got to hear about a punctured fuel tank and some other drama.
Who punctures a fuel tank on Imogene? ?‍♂
