so I found some Mojave takeoffs locally for 800 bucks with 1500 miles (minus tpms). Yay Facebook marketplace.

would the size difference be detrimental to my vehicle? Current tires are 255/70r18 and these are 285/70r17.

Like Gren71 states, it won't be detrimental. As he said, you will loose mpg, I did but not alot. No rubbing on my Sport S non max tow with the 6 speed manual trans. You found a pretty good deal. Got mine with about 1K on them plus spare and tpms. Paid about the same as you. I think you will like the difference. Changes stance and appearance for the better.

Well, the tires fell through so I am back to square one...kind of.

I just said the hell with it and ordered the BFG KO2s through Discount Tire and will get them installed tomorrow. I just like the way the tires look...

I'm surprised no one has answered with the obvious answer.

Best tire for sand is one attached to a sand buggy, SxS, or quad. ?

Unless you are putting paddle tires on the best tire is the one you can let the most air out of. That is the most important factor in the equation when it comes to sand and never underestimate what a couple PSI I can do. Try it out yourself, roll around at 18 psi and then drop it to 14-15 psi and you will be very surprised by the results. I found this out the hard way down in OBX with my JK when I was hesitant to take too much air out, mainly because when I got off the beach I wanted to be able to drive safely back on the road, but now I got a compressor so I drop it down as much as I need.
