I use a Thule hitch mounted bike rack. I’ve tried different mounting options in the bed but the hitch mount is much more convenient and faster to load/unload often.The problem is of you have to tow as well.

I use a similar solution, Transit sold by Performance and/or Bike Nahsbar.

I used to have a roof rack on my Subi, and learned to place a trash can in the driveway to remind me when I got home.

I did a similar mistake with a fishing kayak on top... Thankfully I didn't do any damage, other than my ego!

I use a tailgate pad.

Pros: Easy, quick access; up to 5 bikes; doesn't require wheel removal.
Cons: Bikes take up bed space

I also have a 4-bike hitch mount I can use if I need to haul bikes and haul stuff, but my normal profile is a day-trip to the trails and the bed pad makes for quick and simple hauling.
