I’m thinking of upgrading my phone mount from the bulletpoint clamp mount to their charging MagSafe mounts. Their literature notes that some vehicle USB ports don’t support the standard that makes MagSafe charging work, and they put it off on the buyer to find out. I tried my dealership and got no where. So quickest way to a solution is to ask someone who has tried it.

So two questions for those who have Bullet point wireless charging MagSafe iPhone mounts

1. Will the JT’s USB ports support the MagSafe charging?

secondary question,

2. Does Apple CarPlay work via the MagSafe mount?

The worst off road we go is a monthly trip to the dump to get rid of yard debris like leaves, cuttings etc. so I’m not really concerned about having the phone fall off under adverse driving conditions. That said, please speak up if you’ve used this mount and the phone falls off during normal road driving.

thanks

1. I have it. I plugged it in via a 12v usb adapter, not via the truck, but dont see why it couldn't work.
2. carplay will not work via any magsafe connector. I do use the CarLinKit USB Wireless carplay adapter plugged in via the usb outlet in the center console so that I dont have to plug the phone in for carplay.

while not as strong as some other magsafe adapters i have had, i have not had the phone fall off ever.

Depends on your phone. I changed from magnetic to clamp on my wife’s JLU because it fell off constantly. She had the 6u design one. She tends to buy the plus size phones and they’re just too heavy. I got both of us the bullet point clip style and never looked back.

I started with a magsafe bulletpoint, and I had my phone fall off constantly while off-roading, and several times on potholes on paved roads. Went to a clamp with wireless charging and am very happy now

I have this:
Jeep Gladiator Bulletpoint MagSafe phone mount, will it work on the JT? tpointMagSafe-CompatibleWirelessChargerFront_5000x

With an iPhone 13 Pro Max and AMZN mag-safe case that is just a case - no wallet or pocket on the back.

Only had charging issues due to the USB wire when I re-routed it behind the interior panels; I'm sure I crushed it somewhere. But it still works.

I also have the BP clamp phone mount, which isn't deep enough for my wife's phone (she has a case with wallet).

Wonder what the weight limit for the magsafe mount is, I have a pixel 8 with a magsafe case. Been thinking of going this route but need to wire up a charge port on the dash for it.

I have a mag mount, and ran power from a USB splitter adapter behind the dash connected to a cheap USB port...thing. It works fine.
I don't have an iphone but a motorola with a mag case. My wife has a samsung s23 or whatever the new one is with a mag case as well.
No issues charging the samsung or having the device fall off.
The bulletpoint mag charger is really strong. My mag charger is a cheapo from china and its strong as well.
Since I don't have an iphone I'm not sure what you mean by magsafe + carplay. Not sure what one has to do with the other. The radio doesn't support wireless carplay or android auto if it helps(at least up to 2023). For android auto, just putting the device on the mag mount wouldn't connect to android auto. I have AAWireless to fix that problem and go wireless. That works well. Only works for android but there are a bunch of wireless carplay adapters out there that do the same thing for iphone.

Thanks everybody.

Shift,
Carplay is wired through the USB port along with the charging circuit. I’ve only used the MagSafe for charging, both my watch and phone. I don’t really know enough about the technology but it struck me that unless the Magsafe connection also handled data like USB, installing a MagSafe charger adapter to a vehicle without wireless CarPlay might complicate things, I.e. phone needs to be plugged into USB (data and charging) and the MagSafe also charges, so who’s on first?

It sounds like if I’m going to go with a charging mount, I should add the wireless dongle for CarPlay, otherwise go with the simple magnet only mount and continue to play plug the phone in.

Note - if you go for a wireless carplay adapter, make sure Apple isn't planning any updates soon.

I got an adapter and it worked for 1 week. Apple rolled out 17.2 and killed the ability to connect to my adapter. It has happened to others before as well.

Ah, that actually explains a lot. I have a Carlinkit wireless adapter in my car that was working great, then just stopped reliably connecting. I wrote it off as cheap junk from Asia.

Does the carlinkit work well ? Would it work if kept in the center console with center console usb ?

I have had the carlinkit 5 for about a week now.
Overall I have been very pleased.
I have also tried charging my phone with a magsafe charger.
I have found the usb-c port does not activate if I have the carlinkit plugged in when I start the Jeep.
I am now thinking about a usb port not connected to the radio to serve as power for the magsafe charger.

I'm curious as I've been wanting to do this mod.. Do you experience disconnects with that adapter since you are using the center console vs one of the dash plugs?

Nope. None at all.
i also used some double stick tape to keep it off to the side and out of the way.
